Shopify’s discount system covers everything from percentage-off codes to complex buy-X-get-Y offers. The 2024 update introduced discount stacking — customers can now combine eligible discounts at checkout — which changes how you need to think about discount eligibility and margin protection.

Automatic Discounts vs Discount Codes

Automatic discounts apply at checkout without the customer entering a code. They are ideal for sitewide sales, free shipping thresholds, and multi-buy offers where friction removal increases conversion. Discount codes require manual entry — use them for targeted campaigns (email list, influencer, loyalty members) where you want to track redemption by source.

One critical rule: automatic discounts and discount codes cannot be combined in a single checkout unless both are set to allow stacking. Post-2024, Shopify allows stacking of up to one automatic discount and one discount code per order, provided neither has stacking disabled.

Setting Usage Limits

Every discount has two usage limit options: total number of uses across all customers, and one use per customer. Always enable “Limit to one use per customer” on acquisition codes (welcome discounts, referral codes) to prevent abuse. For flash sales with genuine scarcity, set a total usage cap — once reached, the code deactivates automatically.

Set an end date on every promotional discount. A 20%-off code with no expiry left active by accident has eroded margin for months in more than a few Shopify stores. Build a discount audit into your monthly operations checklist.

Discount Stacking (Post-2024 Rules)

Shopify now allows product discounts, order discounts, and shipping discounts to stack. A customer could apply a product-level 10% off code alongside a free shipping automatic discount. When creating each discount, you choose whether it can combine with product, order, or shipping discounts independently.

Review your stacking settings carefully. A loyalty tier discount that combines with a sitewide sale and free shipping could push your effective margin below zero on low-AOV orders. Model the worst-case stack before enabling combination permissions.

For conversion-focused discount strategies, Shopify CRO specialists can audit your existing discount structure and identify where promotions are cannibalising full-price revenue.

When NOT to Discount

Discounting trains customers to wait for sales. If your store runs a promotion every 3–4 weeks, repeat customers will delay purchases until the next one. Consider these margin-protective alternatives:

  • Gift with purchase — perceived value without reducing product price
  • Free shipping threshold — lifts AOV without eroding unit margin
  • Loyalty points — deferred discount that rewards loyalty without conditioning all buyers
  • Bundling — sell complementary products together at a slight saving, improving AOV

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply a discount to specific customer segments only?

Yes. Under the “Customer eligibility” section of any discount, you can restrict it to specific customer segments created in Shopify’s customer segmentation tool (based on order history, location, tags, etc.). This is the correct way to power loyalty tiers without a separate app.

How do I track which discount codes are driving the most revenue?

Go to Analytics → Reports → Discount reports. You will see redemption count, total discount value, and associated revenue per code. Pair this with UTM parameters on your campaign links to attribute the traffic source alongside the discount usage in GA4.

What happens to a discount code if the product it applies to goes out of stock?

The discount code remains active but has no applicable product to reduce. Customers entering the code at checkout will see a “Discount not applicable” message if no eligible products are in their cart. The code does not auto-deactivate when stock runs out — manage this manually or via a Shopify Flow automation.
