Most Shopify stores are held back by the same handful of fixable SEO mistakes. These are not obscure technical issues — they are common problems that cut your organic traffic significantly and are usually straightforward to solve once you know where to look. Here are the 8 most damaging ones, in order of impact.
Mistake 1: Duplicate Product Pages From Multiple Collections
Shopify creates multiple URLs for the same product when it appears in multiple collections — for example, /products/blue-kurti and /collections/kurtis/products/blue-kurti both resolve. Google sees these as two separate pages with identical content, which splits your ranking power. Fix this by ensuring all your product links use the canonical /products/ URL, and add canonical tags where needed. The Shopify theme itself should already do this — check with Screaming Frog (free for up to 500 URLs) to verify no duplicate URLs are being indexed.
Mistake 2: Missing or Generic Title Tags and Meta Descriptions
Leaving title tags and meta descriptions blank means Shopify auto-generates them from product names and descriptions — often producing long, keyword-poor, or truncated results. Every product page, collection page, and blog post needs a unique, keyword-rich title tag (under 60 characters) and meta description (under 160 characters). Edit these in Shopify under each page’s SEO section, or use an SEO app like Plug In SEO to audit and fix them in bulk.
Mistake 3: Slow Loading Images
Large uncompressed product images are the most common cause of slow Shopify stores. A single 5MB image can add 3 to 4 seconds to your load time. Compress all images before uploading using TinyPNG, or install Crush.pics to automatically compress existing and future images. Target image files under 200KB for product shots. This single fix often improves Core Web Vitals scores dramatically.
Mistake 4: Not Using H1 and H2 Tags Correctly
Every product and collection page should have exactly one H1 tag (the page’s main title) containing your primary keyword. Use H2 tags for subheadings within the product description. Many Shopify themes use the product name as the H1 automatically — confirm this in your theme and check that your keyword is included naturally in the product title.
Mistake 5: Missing Alt Text on Product Images
Alt text describes images to Google’s crawlers — it is how images get indexed and how your store appears in Google Images search. Most Shopify stores have blank alt text on the majority of product images. Add descriptive alt text to every image: “Women’s navy blue linen kurta with embroidered neckline” is far better than leaving it blank or writing just “product-image.” Edit alt text in Shopify’s media library or directly on each product.
Mistake 6: Not Building Internal Links
Internal links pass ranking authority between pages and help Google understand your site structure. Most Shopify stores have very few internal links — products are listed in collections but rarely linked from blog posts or other pages. Add internal links from blog posts to relevant product pages. Link related products to each other. Link your collection pages from your homepage content. This simple practice strengthens your entire site’s rankings.
Mistake 7: Thin or Copied Product Descriptions
Copying manufacturer descriptions or writing one-line product descriptions is a sure way to underperform in search. Google does not rank thin, duplicate content. Write unique, detailed descriptions for every product — minimum 150 words that describe the product’s benefits, use cases, materials, and who it is ideal for. This also significantly improves your conversion rate, making it one of the highest-impact improvements you can make.
Mistake 8: No Schema Markup for Products
Product schema markup tells Google the structured details of your products — price, availability, ratings — which enables rich snippets (star ratings, price) to appear in search results. These rich results dramatically improve click-through rates. Most modern Shopify themes include basic product schema, but check using Google’s Rich Results Test. If schema is missing or incomplete, install JSON-LD for SEO to add comprehensive structured data automatically.
