The first 100 customers are the hardest you will ever acquire. You have no reviews, no social proof, no word of mouth, and no ad data. Yet those first 100 buyers teach you everything — which products resonate, what messaging works, and who your real customer is. Here is a specific, channel-by-channel action plan to get there.
Customers 1 to 10: Your Personal Network
Your first 10 customers will almost certainly come from people who already know and trust you. Post about your store launch in your WhatsApp groups, on your personal Instagram and Facebook, in your university alumni group, and at your workplace. Ask directly: “I just launched my store — I would love for you to be one of my first customers. Here is a launch discount just for you.”
Do not be embarrassed about asking directly. Every successful brand was once an awkward first post on someone’s personal profile. These first 10 buyers will also give you your first reviews, photos, and word-of-mouth referrals — invaluable assets for everything that follows.
Customers 10 to 30: Relevant Online Communities
Join Facebook groups, Reddit communities, and WhatsApp groups where your target customers already gather. Contribute genuinely — answer questions, share helpful content — and mention your store only where it is natural and helpful. Do not spam. Many communities allow weekly self-promotion posts — use these strategically with a compelling offer for community members.
Find communities specific to your product niche: parenting groups (for baby products), fitness groups (for activewear), regional food communities (for artisan food), or professional groups (for business products). A single well-received post in the right community can generate 10 to 20 orders from warm leads.
Customers 30 to 60: Instagram Organic
By now you have enough product content and social proof to build your Instagram. Post product Reels, process videos, and customer content consistently — at least 5 times per week. Use relevant hashtags (25 to 30 per post) including niche-specific ones with under 500,000 posts where your content can surface. Reply to every comment and engage with every relevant account in your niche.
DM 10 to 20 micro-influencers in your niche offering free product in exchange for an honest post. Target influencers in the 5,000 to 30,000 follower range — highly engaged, niche-specific audiences, often willing to work with new brands for free products alone.
Customers 60 to 80: Your First Paid Ads
By 60 customers you have enough data — orders, reviews, customer photos — to run paid ads confidently. Start with Meta ads. Upload your customer list as a custom audience and create a lookalike audience. Use your best Instagram Reel as your first ad creative. Budget ₹500 per day for 2 weeks and test 3 different creatives and 2 different audiences to find what converts.
Do not expect instant ROAS from your first campaigns — the algorithm needs 50 purchases to optimise. Give your campaigns time to learn. Your goal at this stage is gathering data, not profit from ads specifically.
Customers 80 to 100: Ask Every Customer to Refer a Friend
Send every customer an email 3 days after delivery: “If you love your [product], we would be incredibly grateful if you shared it with one friend who might love it too — here is a ₹100 discount for them and ₹50 credit for you.” A personal referral from a satisfied customer converts at 4 to 5x the rate of any ad you will run.
When you hit 100 customers, you have proof: proof of product-market fit, proof of which channels work, and proof that real strangers will pay for what you sell. This is the foundation on which everything else is built.
