Most ecommerce brands spend all their marketing budget acquiring customers — and very little retaining them. The post-purchase email sequence is one of the highest-ROI, lowest-cost things you can build because it targets customers who have already proven they’ll buy from you.

A well-built post-purchase sequence increases repeat purchase rate, builds brand loyalty, generates reviews, and reduces returns. Here’s exactly how to build one.

Why Post-Purchase Emails Work

The moment after a purchase is the peak of buyer enthusiasm. The customer is excited about their decision. They’re emotionally invested in your brand. They’re highly receptive to communication. Post-purchase emails sent during this window benefit from open rates of 50–70% — dramatically higher than average marketing email open rates of 20–25%.

Use this window well and you build a customer relationship. Waste it with a generic “Your order has been placed” confirmation and you miss the opportunity entirely.

The 6-Email Post-Purchase Sequence

Email 1: Order Confirmation (Immediate)

Send immediately after purchase. This is a transactional email, so it has high deliverability and 60–70% open rates. Don’t just show order details — use this email to:

  • Confirm the order clearly (products, quantities, shipping address, estimated delivery)
  • Express genuine gratitude — this is your first impression post-purchase, make it warm
  • Set expectations for the next touchpoint (“Your tracking link will arrive within 24 hours”)
  • Include a soft cross-sell: “Customers who bought [product] often pair it with [related product]” — no hard sell, just a suggestion

Email 2: Shipping Notification (When Item Ships)

Triggered when the order ships. Include the tracking link prominently. This email has open rates of 85%+ — customers are anxious to track their order.

Don’t just include the tracking number. Use this email to build anticipation:

  • “Your [product] is on its way — here’s what to do when it arrives”
  • Product tips: how to use, style, or set up what they’ve ordered
  • Share one piece of useful content related to the product category (a recipe, a styling tip, a care guide)

Email 3: Product Education (Day 3–5 After Delivery)

Send 3–5 days after the estimated delivery date. At this point, the customer has their product and is starting to use it. This email should help them get maximum value:

  • How to care for the product (reduces returns and increases satisfaction)
  • Tips for getting the most out of it
  • Common questions answered — preemptively resolve the issues your customer service team hears most often
  • Subtle brand storytelling: why you make it the way you do, the craft or sourcing behind it

Email 4: Review Request (Day 10–14 After Delivery)

The review request email is one of the most valuable emails in the sequence. Reviews feed your conversion rate, your SEO, and your social proof. Best practices:

  • Send 10–14 days after delivery — enough time for them to have used the product
  • Make it personal: “We’d love to know how you’re getting on with your [product name]”
  • Make it easy: link directly to your review form — don’t make them navigate to find it
  • Incentivise (optional): “Leave a review for 10% off your next order” increases response rate by 3–5x, though incentivised reviews should be clearly labelled

Email 5: Cross-Sell (Day 20–30 After Purchase)

By now, the customer is satisfied with their purchase (if you haven’t had a return). This is the moment to introduce complementary products:

  • Use Klaviyo’s product recommendation blocks to show genuinely relevant products, not just bestsellers
  • Frame it as curation: “Based on what you bought, we think you’d love these”
  • Include social proof: show star ratings for the recommended products
  • Optional: small incentive (“Complete the set and save 10%”)

Email 6: Replenishment Reminder (Category-Dependent)

For consumable products (coffee, skincare, candles, supplements), a replenishment reminder sent 7–14 days before the product is likely to run out generates some of the highest conversion rates in email marketing — often 15–25%.

Estimate your product’s average usage cycle and trigger the email accordingly. “Running low on your [product]?” sent at exactly the right moment feels like helpful service rather than marketing.

Setting Up the Sequence in Klaviyo

In Klaviyo: Flows → Create Flow → Placed Order (trigger). Add email nodes with the timing above. Set each email to send only to subscribers (you can’t email marketing content to non-marketing-consented purchasers in many jurisdictions — check your local regulations).

Suppress customers who have already received the cross-sell from the cross-sell email, and customers who have returned their order from the review request.

Expected Performance

  • Email 1 (confirmation): 60–70% open rate
  • Email 2 (shipping): 75–85% open rate
  • Email 3 (education): 30–45% open rate, 2–5% click rate
  • Email 4 (review): 25–40% open rate, 5–10% review submission rate
  • Email 5 (cross-sell): 25–35% open rate, 3–8% purchase rate
  • Email 6 (replenishment): 30–45% open rate, 15–25% purchase rate

A full post-purchase sequence typically generates 8–15% incremental revenue from existing customers — revenue you’re currently leaving on the table if you’re only sending a basic order confirmation.
