On average, 97% of visitors to your Shopify store leave without buying. Retargeting ads bring those lost visitors back — and convert them at significantly higher rates than cold acquisition campaigns. A well-structured retargeting programme is typically the highest-ROAS activity in any ecommerce ad account.
How Retargeting Works
Retargeting uses pixel and event tracking data to identify people who have visited your store or interacted with your brand. You then serve them ads on Meta, Google Display, TikTok, and other networks — keeping your brand and products visible as they browse the internet.
Retargeting works because these visitors already know your brand. They don’t need awareness messaging — they need the right nudge at the right moment to come back and complete the purchase they were already considering.
Setting Up Meta Retargeting for Shopify
Dynamic Product Ads (DPA)
Meta’s Dynamic Product Ads automatically show each visitor the specific products they viewed or added to cart — using your Shopify product catalogue synced through the Meta pixel. DPAs are the highest-converting retargeting format for most ecommerce stores because the product relevance is perfect.
Setup: Meta Ads Manager → Catalogue Sales campaign → select your product catalogue → set audience as “People who visited your website or used your app”.
Audience Segments for Retargeting
Don’t lump all website visitors into one retargeting pool. Segment by intent level:
- Checkout abandoners (7 days): Highest intent — they got to checkout and left. Offer urgency or a small incentive. Expected ROAS: 6–12x.
- Add-to-cart abandoners (14 days): High intent — they chose a product. Social proof and product benefits messaging works well. Expected ROAS: 4–8x.
- Product page viewers (30 days): Moderate intent — they looked but didn’t commit. Lifestyle creative and brand storytelling resonates. Expected ROAS: 3–5x.
- All website visitors (30 days): Broadest pool. Brand awareness and bestseller creative. Expected ROAS: 2–4x.
Setting Up Google Display Retargeting
Google Display retargeting reaches your site visitors as they browse other websites, YouTube, Gmail, and Google’s partner network. Connect Google Ads to Shopify via the Google & YouTube app to set up remarketing lists automatically.
For ecommerce, Dynamic Remarketing on Google Shopping is often more effective than Display — it shows the specific products visitors viewed, similar to Meta’s DPA, but within Google’s network.
Retargeting Creative Strategy
Retargeting ads talk to warm audiences, not cold ones. Your messaging should reflect that they already know you:
- For checkout abandoners: “Complete your order” — direct, product-specific, optional discount. “You left [product] in your cart” with a single CTA.
- For add-to-cart abandoners: Social proof (“4,800 happy customers”), address common objections (returns policy, delivery time), optional incentive.
- For product page viewers: Lifestyle content that shows the product in use — make them visualise owning it. Brand values messaging if appropriate.
Frequency Caps and Ad Fatigue
Retargeting audiences are small and see your ads repeatedly. Without frequency caps, you risk ad fatigue and negative brand associations. Recommended caps:
- Meta: 2–4 impressions per person per day maximum
- Google Display: 3–5 impressions per person per day maximum
- Exclude purchasers: Always exclude people who have already bought. Showing “buy now” ads to existing customers is wasteful and slightly embarrassing.
Refresh retargeting creative every 2–3 weeks. With small audiences seeing ads frequently, creative fatigue happens much faster than in prospecting campaigns.
