Your Welcome Sequence Is Your Most Important Email Asset

New subscribers are most engaged in the first 24–72 hours after joining your list. They’ve just discovered your brand, they’re curious, and — if they signed up via a discount popup — they’re actively considering buying. Miss this window and they’ll forget you exist.

A well-built welcome sequence converts 15–30% of new subscribers into first-time buyers. For a store with 500 new subscribers per month, that’s 75–150 extra sales — without spending a penny more on ads.

Email 1: Deliver the Promise (Send Immediately)

If you offered a discount to get the opt-in, email 1 must deliver it immediately. Delay this and trust evaporates. Subject line: “Here’s your 10% off — welcome to [Brand Name]”

Beyond the discount code, use email 1 to:

  • Confirm what they signed up for (offers, new arrivals, exclusive content)
  • Show your hero product or bestselling collection with a clear CTA
  • Set expectations: “We send 1–2 emails per week — no spam, ever”
  • Add a personal touch: founder photo, brand origin story in 2–3 sentences

Email 2: Brand Story (Send 1 Day Later)

Most Shopify stores skip straight to selling. Don’t. Email 2 is about building the emotional connection that makes people choose you over a cheaper competitor.

Tell your origin story: Why did you start this brand? What problem were you trying to solve? What makes you different from every other store selling similar products? Authenticity here converts better than polished copywriting.

Subject line examples: “Why we started [Brand Name]” / “The story behind [Product]” / “We built this for people like you”

Email 3: Social Proof (Send 2 Days Later)

By now the subscriber has seen your brand twice. Email 3 removes doubt by showing what real customers say. Include:

  • 3–5 customer reviews with names and photos where possible
  • A specific testimonial that addresses the most common purchase objection
  • Press mentions or “as seen in” logos if applicable
  • A UGC photo from a customer using your product

Subject line: “What 2,000+ customers say about [Brand Name]” — specific numbers outperform vague claims.

Email 4: Best Sellers / “Start Here” (Send 4 Days Later)

Not everyone knows where to start in your catalogue. Email 4 removes decision paralysis by curating the path: “Our most popular products for new customers.” Limit to 3–4 products maximum. Too much choice is a conversion killer.

If you have product categories for different needs or use cases, segment at this point. A skincare brand might send “best for dry skin” vs “best for oily skin” based on a question asked at signup or via browse history.

Email 5: Urgency / Last Chance (Send 6 Days Later)

The final email in the welcome sequence creates urgency around your welcome offer expiry. “Your 10% off expires in 24 hours” — this email alone often has the highest conversion rate of the entire sequence because it catches people who were interested but hadn’t acted yet.

Key: this urgency must be real. If you let the code work indefinitely, subscribers learn your “expiry” is fake and stop responding to urgency messaging in the future.

Optimising Your Sequence Over Time

  • A/B test subject lines — even 5% open rate improvements compound into significant revenue
  • Test discount amount: 10% vs 15% vs free shipping — sometimes smaller offers convert equally well
  • Add a conditional split after email 2: if purchased, send to a post-purchase flow instead of continuing the sequence
  • Review sequence performance monthly and update social proof with newer reviews
