How to Set Up WhatsApp Business API for Your Shopify Store

The WhatsApp Business API unlocks automation, broadcast campaigns, multi-agent support, and deep Shopify integration that the free WhatsApp Business app simply cannot offer. But the setup process intimidates many store owners — Meta business verification, phone number registration, BSP selection, and template approval all happen in sequence, and a mistake at any step can add days to your timeline. This guide walks you through every step clearly so you can go from zero to a live WhatsApp channel for your Shopify store in the shortest possible time.

Prerequisites: What You Need Before You Start

Before starting the setup process, gather these items. You need a Facebook Business Manager account — if you do not have one, create it at business.facebook.com. You need a phone number that is not already registered with WhatsApp (personal or business app). This can be a mobile number, a landline that can receive calls, or a virtual number. You cannot use a number that currently has WhatsApp installed — you will need to delete WhatsApp from that number first. You need your business registration documents for Meta verification. And you need to choose a Business Solution Provider — the platform through which you will access the API.

Step 1: Set Up Your Meta Business Manager

Log in to business.facebook.com and create a new business account if you do not already have one. Enter your legal business name exactly as it appears on your business registration documents — this matters for verification. Add your business website, business email, and business phone number. Meta will cross-reference these details during verification, so they must be consistent and publicly findable.

Navigate to Business Settings and complete your business profile fully. Upload your business logo. Add your business address. If your Shopify store has been operating for some time and has visible web presence, verification tends to be faster. Newer stores or stores with thin web presence sometimes face additional verification steps.

Step 2: Choose and Sign Up with a Business Solution Provider

You access the WhatsApp Business API through an authorised BSP, not directly from Meta. For Shopify stores, the leading options are Interakt, Wati, Zoko, and AiSensy — each is covered in detail in our comparison post. For the purposes of this setup guide, the process is similar across all four platforms.

Create an account on your chosen BSP. During signup, you will be asked to connect your Facebook Business Manager account. Grant the necessary permissions — the BSP needs access to create and manage WhatsApp Business Accounts on your behalf. Most BSPs walk you through this with an OAuth flow that takes two or three clicks.

Step 3: Create a WhatsApp Business Account (WABA)

Inside your BSP dashboard, navigate to the WhatsApp setup section. You will create a new WhatsApp Business Account (WABA) — this is a Meta-level entity that sits inside your Business Manager and is distinct from the BSP account itself. Give your WABA a name that matches your brand exactly. This name appears in conversations when customers receive messages from you.

You will also set up a phone number at this stage. Enter the phone number you want to use for your Shopify store’s WhatsApp channel. Remember — this number must not have WhatsApp installed on it. Meta will send a verification code via SMS or voice call to confirm you own the number.

Step 4: Complete Meta Business Verification

Meta business verification is a one-time process that unlocks higher messaging limits and, in some cases, the verified green tick badge. In Business Manager, go to Security Centre and start the verification process. You will need to provide one of the following: an official business document (incorporation certificate, business licence, or utility bill in the business name), or go through domain verification (proving you own the website associated with your business).

Domain verification is often faster for e-commerce brands since it just requires adding a meta-tag to your Shopify store’s theme. In Shopify, go to Online Store > Themes > Edit code, open theme.liquid, and paste the provided meta verification tag inside the <head> section. Save, then return to Business Manager and click Verify. Approval typically takes minutes to a few hours for domain verification versus one to three business days for document verification.

Step 5: Create and Submit Message Templates

The WhatsApp Business API uses a template system for outbound messages — any message you initiate to a customer (rather than responding to an inbound message) must use a pre-approved template. Templates are created in your BSP dashboard and submitted to Meta for review.

Start with these four essential templates for Shopify stores. An order confirmation template that includes the order number, items summary, and estimated delivery. A shipping notification template with tracking link. An abandoned cart recovery template that mentions the specific product left in the cart and includes a direct link back to the cart. And a general promotional template for broadcasts that includes your brand name and an opt-out instruction.

Templates must follow Meta’s formatting guidelines. They cannot be purely promotional without a transactional component unless they fall in the marketing template category. They must include the business name. They cannot contain misleading content, vague urgency, or prohibited categories. Template approval typically takes 24 to 48 hours. Some BSPs offer pre-approved template libraries for common Shopify use cases, which can accelerate this step significantly.

Step 6: Install the Shopify Integration

Each major BSP has a Shopify app in the Shopify App Store. Install your BSP’s app and connect it to your Shopify store by logging in with your BSP credentials. The app will request access to read orders, customers, and cart events — approve all permissions as these are needed for automation to work.

Once connected, configure the trigger events. Enable order confirmation — trigger fires when Shopify creates a new order. Enable order shipped — trigger fires when Shopify marks an order as fulfilled. Enable abandoned cart — trigger fires when a customer with a known phone number (collected at checkout or via opt-in) abandons a cart. Set your preferred delay — 30 to 60 minutes is the standard recommendation to avoid messaging people who are still considering.

Step 7: Set Up the Opt-In Checkout Widget

WhatsApp compliance requires explicit opt-in before you send marketing messages. Most BSPs provide a checkout widget that adds a checkbox to your Shopify checkout page. Enable this in your BSP dashboard, customise the copy (“Get order updates and exclusive offers on WhatsApp”), and save. The BSP handles storing opted-in numbers and respecting opt-outs automatically.

You can also add a Click-to-Chat floating button to your Shopify store for inbound conversations. Most BSPs provide a code snippet you paste into your Shopify theme’s additional scripts section. This button appears on product pages, the cart page, and the home page — wherever you want to invite customers to start a conversation.

Step 8: Test Everything Before Going Live

Before sending messages to real customers, test every flow. Place a test order on your own Shopify store using a phone number that has WhatsApp. Confirm the order confirmation message arrives within two minutes. Verify the message formatting looks correct — product name, order number, and any personalisation variables populate correctly. Test the shipping notification by marking the test order as fulfilled. Add items to your cart and abandon it, then wait for the recovery message to arrive at the configured delay.

Check the link in the abandoned cart message — it should go directly to the cart or product page, not a generic homepage. Check that UTM parameters are appended so you can track WhatsApp-driven revenue in Shopify analytics. Fix any formatting issues in your templates before exposing them to real customers.

Step 9: Understand Messaging Limits and Tiers

New WhatsApp Business API numbers start in Tier 1, which allows 1,000 unique conversations per day. As your number demonstrates good delivery rates and low spam reports over 30 days, Meta automatically upgrades you to Tier 2 (10,000/day) and eventually Tier 3 (100,000/day). For most Shopify stores, Tier 1 is sufficient at launch. If you anticipate high launch volumes — for example, a large Black Friday broadcast — verify your account and warm up the number gradually in the weeks before the campaign.

Need Help with the Setup?

The setup process has many steps and several waiting periods — Meta verification, template approvals, Shopify webhook testing. Getting it wrong at any point means delays or, worse, a non-compliant setup that risks your number’s quality rating.
