WhatsApp Catalogue Integration with Shopify Store: The Complete Guide
WhatsApp’s native catalogue feature transforms your business WhatsApp number from a messaging channel into a mobile storefront. When integrated with your Shopify store, it allows customers to browse your products, view prices and descriptions, and receive direct purchase links — all without leaving their WhatsApp conversation. For Shopify store owners in markets where WhatsApp is the primary internet interface for many customers, this is not a nice-to-have feature — it is a fundamental part of how purchases happen. This guide covers the complete setup: from syncing your Shopify product data to WhatsApp, to enabling agents to share product cards in conversations, to configuring catalogue messages in automated broadcast campaigns.
What Is the WhatsApp Business Catalogue?
The WhatsApp Business catalogue is a product listing feature built into the WhatsApp Business platform. Businesses can upload products with images, names, descriptions, prices, and links. Once uploaded, the catalogue is accessible via a “View Catalogue” button on your WhatsApp Business profile. Customers visiting your profile can browse all products, tap on individual items for details, and send you a message about a specific product — all within WhatsApp.
When you use the WhatsApp Business API (rather than the free app), the catalogue integrates with BSP platforms like Zoko, Interakt, and others, enabling agents to proactively share product cards in conversations and enabling bots to respond to product inquiries with catalogue items. This is where the real commercial power emerges — your entire Shopify inventory becomes shareable in conversational WhatsApp interactions.
Two Ways to Populate a WhatsApp Catalogue from Shopify
Method 1: Manual Upload via WhatsApp Manager
For stores with fewer than 100 products, manual upload via WhatsApp Manager (business.facebook.com) is feasible for initial setup. Log in to WhatsApp Manager, select your WhatsApp Business Account, go to Catalogue Manager, and create a new catalogue. Upload products individually or via CSV. Each product requires a name (max 100 characters), description (max 200 characters), price, currency, link to the product page, and at least one image (minimum 500×500 pixels, max 8MB, JPEG or PNG).
The limitation of manual upload is maintenance. Every time you update a product price, add a new variant, or discontinue a product on Shopify, you need to manually update the WhatsApp catalogue. For stores with dynamic inventory, this becomes unsustainable quickly.
Method 2: Automated Sync via BSP Shopify Integration
BSPs like Zoko, Interakt, and others offer automated catalogue sync with Shopify. Once you connect your Shopify store to the BSP and enable catalogue sync, the BSP reads your Shopify product data (via Shopify’s Admin API) and populates and updates your WhatsApp catalogue automatically. New products added to Shopify appear in the WhatsApp catalogue. Price changes sync. Out-of-stock products can be automatically hidden or marked unavailable.
This is the right approach for any store with more than 50 products or regular inventory changes. The sync frequency varies by BSP — some sync in real time, others batch sync every few hours. For stores where prices change frequently (flash sales, dynamic pricing), check your BSP’s sync frequency and configure it to match your needs.
Setting Up WhatsApp Catalogue Sync with Your BSP
The setup process varies slightly by BSP, but the general steps are consistent across all major platforms.
- Log in to your BSP dashboard and navigate to Catalogue or Store settings
- Connect your Facebook Business Manager account if not already connected — the BSP needs access to your WABA’s catalogue
- Select the Shopify integration option and authenticate with your Shopify store credentials
- Map your Shopify product fields to WhatsApp catalogue fields — product title to catalogue name, product body HTML to description, variant price to price, featured image to catalogue image
- Choose which Shopify collections or product types to sync — you may not want every product in your WhatsApp catalogue, particularly draft products, internal SKUs, or products not suitable for conversational sales
- Enable automatic sync and set the sync frequency
- Run the initial sync and verify a sample of products appear correctly in WhatsApp Manager
Enabling Product Sharing in Agent Conversations
One of the most powerful applications of a synced catalogue is enabling agents to share product cards during support and sales conversations. When a customer asks “Do you have a kurta in size M under ₹1,500?”, an agent can search the catalogue inside the BSP inbox, select matching products, and send them as visual product cards directly in the conversation. The customer sees the product image, price, and description and can tap a “View on website” or “Add to cart” link without leaving WhatsApp.
This conversational product sharing converts at significantly higher rates than directing customers to search your website independently. The friction of navigating to a site, finding the relevant product, and returning to purchase is eliminated. In Zoko’s platform, this is particularly well implemented — agents have a full catalogue search within the inbox interface.
Using Catalogue Messages in Automated Flows
WhatsApp’s catalogue message type allows you to send a single message with a product card or a collection of product cards as a browsable gallery. This message type is available in broadcast campaigns and automated flow messages. For Shopify stores, the most valuable applications are new arrival announcements (send a gallery of the new collection’s top five products), personalised recommendations (trigger a catalogue message based on a customer’s previous purchase history), and restock notifications (when an out-of-stock item a customer inquired about comes back in stock, send a catalogue message with the product).
Setting up catalogue messages in automated flows requires that your BSP supports WhatsApp’s catalogue message template type (an Interactive Product Message or Multi-Product Message). Not all BSPs support this fully — check your platform’s documentation before building flows that depend on it.
WhatsApp Commerce: Completing Orders Inside WhatsApp
Meta has extended the catalogue feature toward a fuller commerce experience in markets where WhatsApp Pay is available (currently Brazil and India). Customers can add catalogue items to a WhatsApp cart and send the cart to the business to complete purchase. For Indian Shopify stores, this creates a path where a customer can place an order without visiting the Shopify storefront at all — the entire discovery, selection, and purchase flow happens in WhatsApp.
Implementing WhatsApp Pay integration with Shopify requires custom development to handle the payment webhook from WhatsApp Pay and create the corresponding Shopify order. BSPs like Zoko are building this natively. For stores targeting Indian customers who prefer UPI payments via WhatsApp Pay, this is a conversion channel worth investing in as it matures.
Catalogue Limitations to Know
The WhatsApp catalogue has some practical limitations to plan around. The catalogue only supports one price per product — if your Shopify product has multiple variants at different price points, you either list the starting price (with “from” in the description) or create separate catalogue entries per variant. Images must be static (no video in catalogue items as of current API). Product descriptions have a 200-character limit — write concise, punchy descriptions rather than full product details. Search within the catalogue is limited — customers cannot filter by size, colour, or price range in the native WhatsApp interface.
These limitations mean the WhatsApp catalogue works best as a discovery and sharing layer, with purchase completion happening on your Shopify storefront where filtering, variant selection, and full product detail pages are available. Position catalogue messages as the top-of-funnel touchpoint that drives traffic to relevant Shopify product pages, not as a complete replacement for the storefront.
Measuring Catalogue Performance
Track product catalogue message performance through your BSP’s analytics. Key metrics: catalogue message delivery rate, product card tap rate (how many recipients tap on a product card), click-through rate from product card to your Shopify product page, and conversion rate from catalogue-driven sessions in Shopify analytics (use UTM parameters on all catalogue product links). Compare catalogue message click-through rates against plain broadcast messages to validate the additional setup effort’s ROI.
