A/B Testing Guide for Shopify — What to Test First

A/B testing is the scientific backbone of conversion rate optimisation. It removes guesswork from store decisions and replaces gut feel with evidence. But with hundreds of things you could theoretically test on a Shopify store, knowing where to start is the difference between a programme that compounds results year over year and one that produces inconclusive noise.

This guide gives you a prioritised testing roadmap based on what consistently moves the needle for Shopify stores — not generic advice, but a specific sequence grounded in where the money actually leaks.

Why Test Sequence Matters

Most store owners make the mistake of testing what they find interesting rather than what will have the largest revenue impact. Testing your logo colour is not A/B testing — it is distraction. The correct approach is to prioritise tests by two factors: traffic volume on the page you are testing, and the severity of the conversion problem you have identified.

High-traffic pages with identified friction are always the first priority. Low-traffic pages with speculative hypotheses are last. This sounds obvious, but most stores invert this.

Before You Test Anything: Baseline Requirements

You need at minimum 1,000 unique visitors per variant per week to run meaningful tests. Below that threshold, you will never reach statistical significance in a reasonable timeframe, and any result you see will be noise. If your store gets fewer than 2,000 weekly sessions, focus on qualitative research (session recordings, customer surveys) rather than A/B testing until traffic grows.

  • A baseline conversion rate established over at least 4 weeks of data

Priority 1 — Product Page Tests

Product pages are where the purchase decision is made. They receive the most engaged traffic (visitors who already clicked on a product have shown intent) and have the largest direct impact on add-to-cart rate. Start here.

Test 1: Primary Product Image

The hero product image is the most-viewed element on any product page. Test lifestyle photography (product in use, on a person, in context) versus clean studio shots. For apparel and beauty, lifestyle almost always wins. For technical products, detailed studio shots with annotated features often outperform. Do not assume — test.

Test 2: Add to Cart Button Copy and Colour

The default “Add to Cart” is bland. Test alternatives: “Get Mine”, “Add to Bag”, “Buy Now — Free Delivery Over £40”, “Claim Yours”. The copy that includes a benefit or reduces friction consistently outperforms the generic default. Colour tests are lower priority but worth running once copy is settled — high-contrast buttons that stand out from the page background typically perform best.

Test 3: Above-the-Fold Trust Signals

Test the placement and visibility of your most powerful trust signals — star rating, number of reviews, money-back guarantee, free shipping threshold — in the first screen of the product page without scrolling. Many themes bury these in the footer or below the fold. Moving them above the fold regularly lifts add-to-cart by 5–12%.

Test 4: Product Description Format

Long prose descriptions versus scannable bullet points is one of the most consistent winners in product page testing. Bullet points with benefit-first copy (what the customer gains, not feature features) almost always outperform paragraphs for add-to-cart. Test the structure before testing the words.

Priority 2 — Checkout Tests

Checkout is where committed buyers abandon. Every point of friction here costs you revenue from visitors who already decided to buy. Shopify’s native checkout has limitations for A/B testing, but Shopify Plus allows custom checkout scripts and full A/B testing via platforms like Checkout Blocks.

Test 5: Guest Checkout Prominence

If your checkout forces account creation before purchase, you are losing customers. Test making guest checkout the primary option (or the only option until post-purchase). This single change has been documented to lift checkout completion by 15–25% for stores that previously defaulted to account creation.

Test 6: Shipping Cost Reveal Timing

Unexpected shipping costs at checkout are the number one reason for cart abandonment globally. Test showing your shipping rates prominently on the cart page and product page versus revealing them only at checkout. Transparency earlier in the funnel reduces surprise abandonment at the payment step.

Test 7: Progress Indicators

A simple “Step 1 of 3” progress bar in checkout reduces anxiety and improves completion. Test the presence and format of checkout progress indicators — especially on mobile where the end of the funnel feels uncertain without visual cues.

Priority 3 — Homepage Tests

Homepage tests tend to have lower direct revenue impact than product page or checkout tests because homepage visitors are at the top of the funnel — they may not have decided what they want yet. However, for brand-led stores where the homepage accounts for a large share of traffic, these tests matter.

Test 8: Hero Section Value Proposition

Your hero headline should answer: what do you sell, who is it for, and why should I care? Test different headline framings — benefit-led (“Sleep better from night one”), proof-led (“15,000 customers trust us”), and urgency-led (“Summer sale — 30% off ends Friday”). Match the variant to your current traffic source and customer awareness level.

Test 9: Hero CTA Destination

Where your hero CTA points matters as much as the copy. Test sending homepage visitors directly to your best-selling product versus your top collection page versus a curated landing page. Stores with a clear hero product often see higher revenue when the CTA goes directly to a product page rather than a category.

Priority 4 — Email Capture Tests

Test 10: Pop-up Timing and Offer

Exit-intent pop-ups consistently outperform time-based triggers (30 seconds) for email capture. Test exit-intent versus scroll-depth (50% scroll) versus time-based. For offer type, test percentage discount (“10% off your first order”) versus free shipping (“Free shipping on your first order”) versus value content (“Free skincare guide”) — the best offer depends entirely on your margins and customer profile.

How to Structure Each Test

Every test should follow this structure before you launch it:

  • Hypothesis: If we [change], then [metric] will [improve] because [user insight]
  • Primary metric: The one number that determines a winner (add-to-cart rate, checkout completion, revenue per visitor)
  • Secondary metrics: What else you will monitor to catch unintended consequences
  • Minimum runtime: Calculated based on traffic and expected lift — never less than 14 days
  • Significance threshold: 95% confidence minimum before calling a winner

Do not run more than three active tests simultaneously. Context contamination from overlapping tests creates noise that makes results uninterpretable.

Reading Your Results Honestly

Statistical significance tells you the result is unlikely to be random chance — it does not guarantee that the winning variant will perform as well when rolled out to 100% of traffic. Always validate a winning test by rolling it out fully and monitoring your conversion rate for a further two weeks before banking the result.

Also watch for seasonality effects. A test run during a sale period or major shopping event (Black Friday, Christmas) will produce results that do not generalise to normal trading conditions. Segment your data and apply test windows carefully.
