The Shopify Blog: An Underused SEO Asset

Most Shopify store owners either ignore the built-in blog entirely or post occasional updates that serve no SEO purpose. This is a missed opportunity. A strategic blog content programme can account for 30–60% of a Shopify store’s organic traffic — traffic that arrives at the top of the funnel, learns about your products, and converts into buyers.

The key is treating every blog post as a dedicated SEO asset targeting one specific keyword, not just a diary of company news.

How Blog Content Drives Shopify Sales

Search intent mapping is everything. Commercial-intent keywords (“buy silk pillowcase”) go on product and collection pages. Informational-intent keywords (“how to care for silk bedding”, “benefits of silk pillowcase for hair”) go in blog posts. The buyer reads your informational content, learns they need your product, and clicks through to buy.

This informational-to-commercial funnel works especially well for:

  • Products that require education before purchase (supplements, specialist tools, tech)
  • Products competing on quality rather than price (customers need to understand why yours is better)
  • Products with seasonal or gift-occasion demand
  • Niches where trust and expertise drive conversion

Shopify Blog SEO: Post-by-Post Optimisation

Title and H1

Your blog post title (H1) should match search intent exactly. If the keyword is “how to care for silk bedding”, your title should be “How to Care for Silk Bedding: Complete Guide” — not “Our Top Tips for Beautiful Silk.” The first option tells Google and the searcher exactly what the post is about. Match the format searchers expect: “how to” posts, “X best ways to”, “complete guide”, “vs” comparisons.

Content Structure

Google rewards well-structured, comprehensive content. Use H2 and H3 subheadings that include secondary keywords. Each section answers a specific sub-question about the topic. Include: an intro that shows you understand the reader’s problem, the main body with actionable advice, and a summary or conclusion that links to your products.

Word Count

For competitive keywords, top-ranking posts are typically 1,500–3,000 words. For low-competition long-tail keywords, 800–1,200 words can rank. Quality matters more than word count — don’t pad content to hit a number. Every paragraph should earn its place by answering a real reader question.

Internal Linking to Products

Every blog post should link to at least 2–3 relevant products or collection pages using keyword-rich anchor text. “Shop our range of silk pillowcases” is a good internal link. “Click here” is not. These links drive conversions from informational traffic and pass SEO authority from the blog post to the product page.

Blog Content Planning: The 3-Tier System

  • Pillar posts (1,500–3,000 words) — comprehensive guides on your broadest topic. Rank for high-volume informational keywords. Internally link to all cluster posts.
  • Cluster posts (800–1,500 words) — more specific posts that cover one sub-topic in depth. Internally link back to the pillar.
  • Commercial comparison posts (1,000–2,000 words) — “[Your product] vs [competitor]”, “best [product category] 2026” — bridge informational and commercial intent.

Publishing Cadence

Consistency beats volume. Two well-researched, well-optimised posts per month outperform eight rushed posts. Set a realistic editorial calendar and stick to it. Google rewards sites that publish regularly and consistently over time.
