Internal Links Are Free SEO Power

Every link on your website passes “link equity” — a ranking signal — from one page to another. External backlinks from other websites are the most discussed source of link equity, but internal links within your own Shopify store are equally important and entirely under your control. A well-structured internal link strategy ensures your most important pages (highest-revenue product and collection pages) receive maximum SEO authority.

How Internal Linking Works for Shopify

Think of your Shopify store as a river system. Backlinks from other websites are water flowing in from outside. Internal links are the channels that distribute that water throughout your store. Without those channels, water pools at your homepage and blog and never reaches your product pages.

For most Shopify stores, the homepage gets the most backlinks (it’s the URL most external sites link to). A smart internal linking structure ensures homepage authority flows down to collections, then to products.

The 5-Layer Internal Link Structure

Layer 1: Homepage → Top Collections

Your homepage navigation and hero sections should prominently link to your most important collection pages. These are your highest-traffic, highest-revenue category pages — they need to receive homepage authority. Don’t bury them three clicks deep.

Layer 2: Collection Pages → Products

Collection pages pass authority to the products they contain via the product thumbnail grid. Prioritise showing your highest-converting and highest-margin products at the top of collections so they get the most internal link benefit. Use collection sorting options to control this.

Layer 3: Product Pages → Related Products and Collections

Every product page should link back to its parent collection and to related products via “You might also like” sections. This creates cross-links that distribute authority horizontally across your product catalogue.

Layer 4: Blog Posts → Products and Collections

Blog posts often rank for informational keywords and attract backlinks from other websites. Linking from these posts to relevant products and collections sends both ranking authority and potential buying traffic to your commercial pages. Every blog post should link to at least 2–3 products or collections.

Layer 5: Footer Links

Footer links appear on every page of your site, making them one of the highest-volume internal links on your Shopify store. Include links to your most important collections, not just About/Contact/Terms pages. Every footer link adds to the total internal link count for the target page.

Anchor Text Best Practices

Internal link anchor text (the clickable text) matters for SEO. Rules:

  • Descriptive anchor text — “Shop our organic baby clothes” tells Google what the target page is about
  • Vary anchor text — don’t use the exact same phrase for every internal link to the same page
  • Avoid “click here” — it tells Google nothing about the target page
  • Natural integration — links should appear in natural sentence flow, not bolted on

Orphaned Pages: The Hidden SEO Problem

An orphaned page has no internal links pointing to it. Google can only discover and rank pages it can reach via crawling. If a product page has no internal links pointing to it, Google either won’t find it or will deprioritise it. Crawl your Shopify store with Screaming Frog (free up to 500 URLs) and find pages with zero internal links pointing to them.
