Why Stores Are Migrating to Shopify

WooCommerce requires constant plugin management, server maintenance, and security updates. Magento is expensive to host and develop. BigCommerce lacks Shopify’s app ecosystem and community support. Thousands of stores migrate to Shopify every month — attracted by its reliability, scalability, and the sheer depth of its ecosystem.

A migration done well preserves all your existing SEO rankings, product data, and customer history. Done poorly, it can wipe out years of organic traffic. This guide shows you how to do it right.

Phase 1: Pre-Migration Audit

Before you move anything:

  • Export a full sitemap of your current site and record every URL that has any SEO value (rankings, backlinks, traffic)
  • Document your top 50 URLs by organic traffic in Google Analytics — these must be preserved with redirects
  • Export all product data, customer data, order history, and blog posts
  • Screenshot your current Google Search Console performance for baseline comparison
  • Document all custom functionality that needs to be rebuilt or replaced with Shopify apps

Phase 2: Data Migration

Shopify’s native import tool handles basic CSV imports for products and customers. For complex migrations, use:

  • LitExtension — automated migration tool supporting WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, PrestaShop, and 140+ platforms. Migrates products, categories, customers, orders, blog posts.
  • Cart2Cart — similar to LitExtension, good for large stores
  • Custom migration scripts — for enterprise stores with complex data structures, a custom API-based migration is the most reliable approach

Always do a test migration to a development store first. Verify product variants, image mapping, custom fields, and order history are all correctly transferred.

Phase 3: SEO Preservation (Critical)

The most common migration mistake is not setting up 301 redirects for changed URLs. Shopify’s URL structure differs from WooCommerce and Magento — your /product/red-widget becomes /products/red-widget. Every changed URL needs a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one.

  • Set up redirects in Shopify Admin → Navigation → URL Redirects
  • Import redirect CSV for large stores (Shopify supports bulk redirect imports)
  • Verify every top-traffic URL has a redirect — test each one manually
  • Update your sitemap.xml submission in Google Search Console after launch
  • Monitor Google Search Console daily for two weeks post-migration for 404 errors

Phase 4: Theme and Functionality Build

Choose and customise your Shopify theme, configure your apps (payment gateways, email marketing, reviews), and rebuild any custom functionality from your previous platform. Allow 4–12 weeks for this phase depending on complexity.

Phase 5: Testing and Launch

  • Test checkout with real payment methods (use 5% discounts to minimise transaction cost during testing)
  • Verify all email notifications are configured
  • Test all integrations (inventory sync, fulfilment, CRM)
  • Test on mobile (iOS and Android), all major browsers
  • Launch on a low-traffic day (Tuesday or Wednesday morning) and monitor closely
