Neglected Shopify Stores Lose Performance Over Time

A Shopify store is not a set-and-forget system. Apps accumulate and slow your store. Product pages go out of date. Broken links pile up. Security vulnerabilities emerge. Without regular maintenance, a store that converted at 3% in January may be converting at 2% by December — and you might not notice until revenue has quietly declined for months. Maintenance prevents this drift.

Monthly Shopify Maintenance Tasks

  • Review installed apps — any app you haven’t actively used in 30 days should be uninstalled. Each app adds page weight. Review app billing to avoid paying for apps you’ve stopped using.
  • Check for broken links — run a crawl with Screaming Frog or use the Broken Link Checker Shopify app. Fix or redirect every 404.
  • Review Google Search Console — check for manual penalties, crawl errors, indexing issues, and Core Web Vitals warnings.
  • Check conversion funnel — review Shopify analytics conversion funnel for unusual drop-offs at any stage (session → cart → checkout → purchase).
  • Review product page accuracy — check that prices, descriptions, and inventory levels are current. Seasonal products should be hidden or archived when out of season.

Quarterly Shopify Maintenance Tasks

  • Theme update — update your Shopify theme to the latest version (after testing on a development store). Updates include bug fixes, performance improvements, and new features.
  • Full site speed audit — run PageSpeed Insights on homepage, collection page, and product page. Re-optimise if scores have dropped.
  • Email flow review — review performance of all active email flows. Update social proof (reviews), refresh imagery, test subject lines.
  • SEO ranking check — check rankings for your primary target keywords. Investigate any drops and action content or technical fixes.
  • Backup product data — export a full product CSV backup. Shopify itself is reliable but human error (accidental bulk delete) happens.

Security Maintenance

  • Use strong, unique passwords for your Shopify account and all staff accounts
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all staff accounts — especially admin access
  • Review staff account permissions quarterly — remove access for any staff who have left
  • Check the Shopify Fraud Analysis for any suspicious orders or chargebacks
  • Review third-party app permissions — revoke API access for any apps you’ve uninstalled
