Returns Are Inevitable — How You Handle Them Defines Your Brand
The average ecommerce return rate is 20–30%. Fashion can hit 40%. Returns cost money — shipping, restocking, customer service time. But a poor returns experience costs even more: customers who have a bad returns experience rarely buy again, and 89% of shoppers check returns policies before purchasing. A generous, frictionless returns process is a conversion tool, not just a cost.
Writing a Returns Policy That Converts
- Duration — 30 days minimum. 60 days builds significantly more confidence. Industry leaders like ASOS use 28 days; matching or exceeding this removes a barrier to purchase.
- Free returns — where margins allow, free returns dramatically increase conversion. If you can’t offer fully free returns, consider free returns on exchanges to incentivise exchange over refund.
- Clear conditions — unworn, original packaging, tags attached. Be specific but not punitive. Vague conditions create disputes.
- Easy initiation — customers should be able to start a return in under 2 minutes without emailing customer service.
Setting Up a Self-Service Returns Portal
Shopify’s native returns management (Shopify Admin → Orders → Returns) handles basic return requests. For higher volumes, dedicated returns apps: Loop Returns, Return Prime, or AfterShip Returns create a branded self-service portal where customers enter their order number, select return items and reason, and print a prepaid label — all without involving customer service. These apps pay for themselves in reduced CS time within weeks.
Reducing Return Rates
- Better sizing information — most fashion returns are sizing issues. Detailed size guides, model measurements, and “How does it fit?” customer reviews reduce size-related returns by 20–30%.
- More accurate product images — colour representation, texture, and size context reduce “not as expected” returns
- Customer review filtering by size/fit — showing reviews from customers with similar measurements helps others choose correctly
- Post-purchase emails with usage/care tips — customers who understand a product are less disappointed by it
Converting Returns Into Revenue
Every return is a customer interaction. Use it: offer an instant exchange (replacement size or colour) before issuing a refund, offer store credit at a higher value than cash refund (£35 credit vs £30 refund), and follow up with a win-back email after the return is processed. Return customers who feel well-treated become loyal customers — some studies show 92% of customers who had a positive returns experience buy again.
