Black Friday Is the Most Important Month of the Year for Most Shopify Stores

Black Friday/Cyber Monday (BFCM) generates 4–7x the average daily revenue for most Shopify stores. For many, it represents 20–30% of annual revenue compressed into a single weekend. The difference between stores that win BFCM and those that waste the opportunity isn’t just the offer — it’s preparation, list building, and execution across every channel simultaneously.

8 Weeks Before: Preparation Phase

  • Stock planning — BFCM sellouts are missed revenue. Work backwards from your forecast (last year’s volume × expected growth) and order inventory 8–10 weeks ahead to account for supplier lead times.
  • Email list growth — run a pre-BFCM subscriber drive. “Sign up for early access to our Black Friday deals.” Build the list before the sale so you have a larger audience to email when it launches.
  • Creative production — ads, email templates, social content. Produce everything 4 weeks ahead so you’re not creating assets under pressure in November.
  • Tech stack audit — ensure your Shopify theme, checkout, payment gateways, and critical apps can handle peak load. Contact your hosting/Shopify plan if you expect significantly higher traffic.

Offer Structure Strategy

BFCM offer strategy matters more than discount depth. Options: percentage off sitewide (simple, high visibility), specific product category discounts (protect margin on bestsellers), bundle deals (increase AOV while appearing generous), free gift with purchase (strong perceived value), tiered discounts (spend £50 get 10% off, spend £100 get 20% off). The stores that win BFCM aren’t necessarily those with the deepest discounts — they’re those whose offers are clearest and most compelling.

Email Sequence for BFCM

  • 1 week before — “Something big is coming” teaser to engaged subscribers. Build anticipation, don’t reveal the full offer yet.
  • Early access (Thursday) — early access email to VIP customers and long-time subscribers. 24-hour head start.
  • Launch (Black Friday) — full offer reveal to entire list. Subject line matters enormously — test 2 variants.
  • Reminder (Saturday) — “Only X days left” with social proof (best-selling products, reviews).
  • Cyber Monday — last chance email with genuine urgency. “Sale ends tonight.”
  • Post-BFCM — welcome flow for new buyers. Convert one-time BFCM purchasers into loyal repeat customers.
