Most Shopify Stores Leave Money on the Table With Underpricing

The instinct to price low — “be cheaper than the competition” — is one of the most destructive strategies in ecommerce. Lower prices mean lower margins, less money for marketing, less money for product development, and a brand positioned as cheap rather than valuable. The stores that grow sustainably aren’t the cheapest — they’re the ones whose pricing reflects genuine value and whose brand justifies it.

The 3 Core Pricing Models

1. Cost-Plus Pricing

Formula: (COGS + overheads) × markup multiplier. Simple and ensures profitability, but ignores what customers are willing to pay. A 3x markup on a £10 product gives you £30 — but if the market supports £45, you’ve left £15 per unit on the table. Use cost-plus as a floor (you must hit this to survive) not a ceiling.

2. Competitive Pricing

Price relative to competitors. Problems: assumes your product is identical to competitors’, creates a race to the bottom if everyone does it, and ignores your unique value. Use competitive pricing for market benchmarking but don’t let competitor prices dictate yours unless you’re deliberately positioning as the budget option.

3. Value-Based Pricing

Price based on the perceived value to the customer, not cost. What is the problem your product solves worth? A skincare product that visibly reduces acne in 30 days is worth more than a generic moisturiser. Brand, story, quality signals, and customer experience all contribute to perceived value — and therefore support higher prices. This is the approach that builds the most profitable Shopify stores.

Psychological Pricing Tactics

  • Charm pricing — £29.99 vs £30. The left-digit effect means £29.99 feels meaningfully cheaper even though the actual difference is 1p.
  • Decoy pricing — offer 3 options where the middle option is the one you want to sell. The expensive option makes the middle feel reasonable; the cheap option makes the middle feel superior.
  • Bundle anchoring — show individual prices alongside bundle prices. “Each product individually: £78. Bundle price: £59.” The saving feels tangible when you show the anchor.
  • Free shipping threshold psychology — £X to unlock free shipping. Customers add items to cross the threshold even when the items cost more than shipping would have.
