Why Multi-Language Matters for Shopify Growth
72% of consumers spend more time on websites in their native language. 56% say the ability to get information in their own language is more important than price. If you’re selling in Germany, France, Spain, or any non-English market, a translated store isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s a conversion requirement. Shopify Markets (launched 2022) makes multi-language and multi-currency implementation significantly more manageable than it was previously.
Shopify Markets: The Foundation
Shopify Markets (available on all plans from Basic upwards) lets you configure separate market experiences per country or region: language, currency, pricing, domain structure, and payment methods. Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Markets to create markets for each region you sell to. Each market can have its own domain or subdomain (en.yourstore.com, de.yourstore.com) or use URL path structure (/de/, /fr/).
Adding Languages with Translation Apps
- Shopify Translate & Adapt — free native app, manual translation editing, side-by-side comparison. Good starting point, requires manual work
- Weglot — automatic machine translation + human translation layer, excellent SEO handling with proper hreflang, £150–£500/year depending on word count
- Langify — manual translation focus, good for stores that want precise control over every translated word
- Transcy — auto-translate with human review option, currency switching, strong value for smaller stores
SEO for Multi-Language Shopify Stores
The critical technical SEO element for international stores is hreflang — HTML tags that tell Google which language and region each page is intended for. Without proper hreflang, Google may treat translated pages as duplicate content and suppress them in search. Weglot and Shopify Markets both handle hreflang automatically. If building manually, every translated page needs: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="de" href="https://yourstore.com/de/product/"> pointing to all language versions including the original.
Currency and Pricing by Market
- Shopify Markets supports dynamic currency conversion — show prices in local currency, settle in your base currency
- Manual pricing by market — set specific EUR or GBP prices rather than converted rates (avoids odd pricing like €23.47)
- Local payment methods — iDEAL in Netherlands, Bancontact in Belgium, Klarna in Germany/UK/Nordics; add via Shopify Payments
- Price rounding rules — configure so converted prices end in .99 or .00 rather than odd decimals
Practical Rollout Order
Start with one high-priority market (e.g., Germany if you’re a UK store). Translate, configure pricing, set up the domain or path structure, verify hreflang, then monitor performance for 30 days before adding the next language. This disciplined rollout prevents you from having 5 poorly-configured markets instead of 2 well-configured ones.
