Google Shopping: High-Intent Traffic at Scale

Google Shopping ads show product images, prices, and store names directly in search results — before a user even clicks through to a website. Shopping ads appear for high-intent searches like “buy [product]” or “[product] price” — users who are ready to purchase, not just researching. For Shopify stores selling physical products, Google Shopping is typically the single highest-ROI paid channel alongside Meta retargeting.

Setting Up Google Merchant Center

Google Merchant Center (merchants.google.com) is where your product feed lives. Setup: create an account, verify and claim your website domain, connect Shopify via the Google & YouTube channel app (free, available in Shopify App Store), and sync your product catalogue. The Google & YouTube app automatically creates and updates your product feed whenever you change prices, stock, or product details in Shopify.

Product Feed Optimisation

Your product feed quality directly determines when and how often your ads appear. Optimise:

  • Title — include brand, product name, size, colour, key attributes. “Nike Air Max 90 White Mens Running Shoes Size 10” outperforms “Air Max” as a feed title
  • Description — keyword-rich, 500–1000 characters, include material, dimensions, use case, target audience
  • GTIN/EAN — product barcodes improve match quality and impression share for branded products. Add via Shopify product barcodes field
  • Category — use the most specific Google Product Category available. Correct categorisation improves auction eligibility
  • Images — white background hero images perform best. Use high-resolution (800×800+), no watermarks, no promotional text on image
  • Price accuracy — feed price must match your Shopify product page price exactly. Mismatches cause product disapprovals

Campaign Types: Standard Shopping vs Performance Max

  • Standard Shopping — more control over bidding and product groups, transparent impression and click data, better for experienced advertisers who want control
  • Performance Max — Google’s AI manages targeting, bidding, placements across Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Gmail. Less control but often better overall performance for stores with sufficient conversion data (50+ conversions/month)

Bidding Strategy

  • Start with Maximise Clicks to gather impression and click data
  • Switch to Target ROAS once you have 30–50 conversions recorded — set target based on your actual margin (e.g., 400% ROAS target = 4x return on ad spend)
  • Segment products by margin: high-margin products can support higher bids; low-margin products need tighter ROAS targets
