The £700 Billion Problem

$700 billion in ecommerce revenue is abandoned globally each year. The average Shopify store loses 70% of checkouts before completion. Cart abandonment recovery — systematically winning back these lost sales — is one of the highest-ROI activities available to any Shopify merchant. A well-built recovery programme typically recovers 5–10% of abandoned checkouts, often with minimal additional traffic spend.

Why Customers Abandon Checkout

  • Unexpected costs at checkout (shipping, taxes, fees) — 49% of abandonment (Baymard Institute)
  • Required account creation — 24%
  • Slow or complicated checkout process — 18%
  • Didn’t trust the site with payment information — 17%
  • No suitable payment method — 9%
  • Comparison shopping — just browsing prices, not ready to buy yet

The Three-Channel Recovery Stack

1. Email Recovery (Primary)

  • Email 1: 1 hour after abandonment — reminder, no discount yet. Subject: “You left something behind”
  • Email 2: 24 hours — add social proof (reviews, trust signals). Subject: “Still thinking it over?”
  • Email 3: 72 hours — consider a 10% discount for new customers or urgency signal (“Only 3 left in stock”). Subject: “Last chance — we’re holding your cart”

2. SMS Recovery (High Impact)

SMS sent 30–60 minutes after abandonment has 3–5x higher recovery rate than email alone for the same window. Text: “[Brand]: You left [product name] in your cart. Complete your order: [link]. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.” Keep it short, include the product name, make the link single-click.

3. Retargeting Ads (Reinforcement)

Meta and Google Dynamic Retargeting show the exact products a visitor viewed, to them specifically, on Facebook, Instagram, and Google Display Network. Run for 7–14 days post-abandonment. Set frequency cap at 3–4 impressions/day to avoid ad fatigue. These ads work best as reinforcement alongside email, not in isolation.

Fixing Root Causes of Abandonment

  • Show shipping costs earlier — add a shipping calculator to the cart page before checkout
  • Enable guest checkout prominently — don’t hide it behind the account creation flow
  • Add trust signals at checkout — SSL badge, payment icons, money-back guarantee
  • Reduce form fields — remove company name for B2C, enable address autocomplete
  • Offer more payment methods — PayPal, Apple Pay, Klarna. Remove friction for every buyer type
