What a CRO Audit Actually Reveals

Most Shopify stores are leaving 60–70% of potential revenue on the table because of fixable friction points in their conversion funnel. A CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation) audit systematically identifies where and why visitors are not converting — using data, not assumptions. The output is a prioritised list of changes, each with an evidence basis and expected impact. This is the highest-ROI activity you can do with existing traffic.

Step 1: Map Your Conversion Funnel

In Google Analytics 4 or Shopify Analytics, trace the visitor journey: Landing page → Product page → Add to cart → Checkout → Purchase. At each step, what percentage proceed to the next? Industry benchmarks: product page → cart: 10–15%; cart → checkout: 60–70%; checkout → purchase: 65–75%. Any step significantly below benchmark is your priority focus.

Step 2: Heatmap and Session Recording Analysis

Install Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity (free), or Lucky Orange. Run heatmaps on your homepage, top product pages, and checkout. Session recordings show exactly where users hesitate, rage-click, or abandon. Common findings: users scroll to a point and stop (content below is weak or irrelevant), they click elements that aren’t links (design signals something is clickable when it isn’t), they start checkout but abandon at a specific form field.

Step 3: Product Page Audit

  • Is the Add to Cart button above the fold on mobile without scrolling?
  • Are images high quality, showing multiple angles and in-use shots?
  • Is the price immediately visible without scrolling?
  • Are reviews displayed with count and star rating prominently?
  • Is the returns policy stated clearly on the product page itself?
  • Is there a size guide or dimensions table if relevant?
  • Does the page load in under 3 seconds on mobile?

Step 4: Checkout Friction Audit

  • Is guest checkout the primary path, not buried behind account creation?
  • Are unexpected costs (shipping, tax) shown early rather than revealed at final step?
  • Do you offer PayPal, Apple Pay, or Google Pay — one-tap payment for returning users?
  • Is the checkout mobile-optimised with large tap targets for form fields?
  • Are there any error messages that don’t clearly explain what to fix?

Prioritising Fixes

Prioritise by: impact (how much of your funnel does this affect?), effort (how quickly can you fix this?), and evidence (is this a confirmed problem or a hypothesis?). High traffic pages with strong evidence of friction (heatmap, session recording, funnel drop data) get fixed first. Never implement CRO changes without a measurement plan — define what success looks like before you start, not after.
