Branding Is What Makes Premium Pricing Possible
Two stores selling the same £15 candle at £15 and £35 respectively. The second store has stronger branding — better visual identity, clearer brand story, more premium packaging. Both candles are identical. Buyers pay more for the brand. This is the fundamental economic case for investing in branding: it expands your pricing power, reduces price sensitivity, increases LTV, and makes customers feel good about choosing you over cheaper alternatives. Branding is not decoration — it’s margin.
Brand Identity Elements
- Logo — the minimum. Primary logo, secondary mark/icon, and monochrome versions. File formats: SVG (scalable), PNG (transparent background), JPG. Never distort or recolour outside brand guidelines
- Colour palette — primary colour (brand identity), secondary colour (complement), accent colour (CTA, highlights), neutral (backgrounds and text). 4–5 colours maximum. Specify hex codes
- Typography — one or two typefaces maximum. Heading font (personality, character) and body font (legibility, neutrality). Web-safe or Google Fonts for consistent cross-device rendering
- Brand photography style — specify: lighting style (natural/studio), background (white/lifestyle/natural), mood (editorial/minimal/vibrant), model type and styling direction
- Tone of voice — adjectives that describe how your brand writes. “Warm but direct,” “Expert but approachable,” “Playful but not childish.” Applied to product descriptions, email, social, and customer service
Brand Story: Why It Matters for Conversion
Buyers who connect with a brand’s origin story convert at higher rates, have higher LTV, and refer more often. The formula: the founder identified a gap or frustration, couldn’t find an existing solution they were happy with, created it themselves, and now offers it to others with the same problem. This story, told authentically on your About page and in your email welcome series, transforms you from “product seller” to “brand with values and identity.”
Brand Guidelines Document
A brand guidelines document captures all brand identity elements in one place — ensuring consistency across your website, packaging, social media, ads, and customer communications. Even a 2-page brand guide (logo usage, colours, fonts, tone of voice examples) prevents the brand inconsistency that plagues early-stage stores. Share with every designer, agency, and contractor who works on your brand.
