Fraud Is a Significant Cost for Growing Shopify Stores

Ecommerce fraud costs UK retailers over £1 billion annually. For Shopify stores, fraud arrives in several forms: stolen credit card orders, friendly fraud (legitimate customers claiming they didn’t receive an order they did receive), account takeover, and refund abuse. Chargebacks — when a customer disputes a transaction with their bank — are especially damaging: you lose the product, the revenue, and pay a chargeback fee (£10–£20 per dispute). A chargeback rate above 1% risks your payment processor account.

Shopify’s Built-In Fraud Detection

Shopify analyses every order for fraud risk signals and assigns a risk level: low, medium, or high. Review Orders → select any order → Fraud analysis section. Fraud signals include: billing address doesn’t match card’s registered address, customer used a proxy/VPN, email address created recently, multiple failed payment attempts, order shipped to a different address than billing, and IP address in a high-risk country. Shopify Fraud Protect (US only) provides chargeback protection for eligible orders at a per-transaction fee.

High-Risk Order Indicators to Watch For

  • Order total significantly higher than your average order value
  • Multiple high-value items of different categories (random high-price items, not a coherent purchase)
  • Expedited shipping on a first order (fraudsters want fast delivery before the fraud is detected)
  • Billing address in one country, shipping address in another
  • Multiple orders placed in quick succession with different credit cards but same shipping address
  • Free email provider address (gmail, yahoo) on a £500+ order from a new customer

Prevention Tools

  • NoFraud — AI fraud prevention, real-time decisioning, chargeback guarantee on approved orders. Integrates with Shopify natively
  • Signifyd — enterprise-grade fraud protection, financial guarantee on all approved orders
  • Cloudflare Turnstile — CAPTCHA-free bot protection on checkout to prevent card testing attacks
  • Address Verification (AVS) — built into Shopify Payments; declines cards where billing address doesn’t match bank records

Responding to Chargebacks

When you receive a chargeback notification, respond within the deadline (typically 7–20 days depending on card network). Evidence to submit: order confirmation with IP address, delivery confirmation with tracking number and signature if applicable, email correspondence with the customer, screenshot of the Shopify order with fraud analysis showing “low risk,” and product listing showing what was ordered. Win rates on well-evidenced chargeback disputes run 40–60%. Keep order evidence for 18 months.
