Product Descriptions Do the Selling When You’re Not There
A customer landing on your product page at 11pm, browsing on their phone, has no salesperson to answer questions. Your product description is the salesperson. It needs to pre-empt objections, communicate value, describe sensory experience, and create desire — all in a few hundred words. Most Shopify product descriptions fail because they list features without connecting them to customer benefits, or because they’re so thin they answer nothing and the customer leaves still uncertain.
Features vs Benefits: The Core Distinction
Features describe the product. Benefits describe what the product does for the customer. “Made from 100% merino wool” (feature) vs “Stays fresh for days without washing — merino wool’s natural anti-bacterial properties mean you can wear it on a week-long trip without a washing machine” (benefit). Every feature should answer the customer’s implicit question: “So what? What does that mean for me?” Writing benefits, not just features, is the difference between a catalogue entry and a conversion.
Sensory Language
Online shoppers can’t touch, smell, or taste your products. Sensory language partially bridges this gap. Don’t write “soft fabric” — write “buttery-soft cashmere that feels like being wrapped in warmth.” Don’t write “good flavour” — write “deep, rich chocolate with a hint of sea salt that lingers on the palate.” Sensory descriptions create mental simulations that drive purchase desire. The specificity is what makes it believable and evocative.
Product Description Format
- Opening line: the one sentence that captures the essence of the product and why someone would want it
- Paragraph description: 50–150 words expanding on the benefit story, use case, or emotional value
- Bullet point specifics: 4–8 bullets covering key specifications, materials, dimensions, care instructions. Scannable for customers who scroll to the detail
- Social proof hint: brief mention of review strength if the reviews widget isn’t immediately visible
SEO Optimisation for Product Descriptions
Include your primary keyword naturally in the first paragraph (not forced). Include related keywords and synonyms throughout. Avoid duplicate descriptions across similar products — write unique copy for each SKU. 150–300 words is sufficient for most product descriptions — longer is only better if the additional content is genuinely useful, not padding for SEO. Meta description (the preview text in Google) should be 140–160 characters and highlight the key benefit and brand.
