Why Email Flows Generate More Revenue Than Broadcasts
Email broadcasts — the newsletters and promotions you send to your whole list — typically generate 20–30% of email revenue. The other 70–80% comes from automated flows: sequences triggered by customer behaviour that run without any manual work from you.
Flows work because they reach customers at exactly the right moment. An abandoned cart email sent 1 hour after someone leaves your store converts at 5–10 times the rate of a generic promotion. A welcome series sent when someone joins your list converts at 3x the rate of a broadcast six months later.
This guide covers the six core Shopify email flows every store needs, how to set them up, and the benchmarks to aim for.
Flow 1: Welcome Series (5–7 Emails)
Triggered when someone joins your email list. The highest-engagement window in your entire email programme — open rates of 40–60% are normal.
- Email 1 (immediate): Deliver the lead magnet or discount code. Brand story. What to expect from your emails.
- Email 2 (day 2): Your best-selling products. Social proof. One clear CTA.
- Email 3 (day 4): Brand values, sourcing story, or founder story. Build emotional connection.
- Email 4 (day 7): Customer reviews and UGC. Overcome objections.
- Email 5 (day 10): Urgency on the welcome discount if not yet used. “Your 15% off expires in 48 hours.”
- Email 6 (day 14): Soft educational content. How to get the most from your product category.
- Email 7 (day 21): Re-engage with your best offer. If they still haven’t bought, you need a stronger hook.
Benchmark: Welcome series should generate £1–£3 per subscriber over its 21-day window.
Flow 2: Abandoned Cart (3 Emails)
Triggered when a logged-in customer adds to cart but doesn’t complete checkout. Shopify captures this natively.
- Email 1 (1 hour after): “You left something behind.” Show the cart. No discount yet.
- Email 2 (24 hours after): Social proof on the specific products. Reviews, ratings. Gentle nudge.
- Email 3 (72 hours after): Your strongest incentive. 10% off, free shipping, or a bonus gift.
Benchmark: 5–15% recovery rate. Revenue per recipient of £2–£8 depending on AOV.
Flow 3: Browse Abandonment (2 Emails)
Triggered when a subscriber views a product page but doesn’t add to cart. Lower intent than cart abandonment but high volume.
- Email 1 (4 hours after): “Still thinking about [product name]?” Show the product with key benefits.
- Email 2 (48 hours after): Social proof, FAQ about that product, related alternatives.
Benchmark: 1–3% conversion. Works best for higher-ticket items (AOV £50+).
Flow 4: Post-Purchase Series (4 Emails)
Triggered after a completed order. Underused by most stores, massively valuable for LTV.
- Email 1 (immediately): Order confirmation. Branded, warm, set expectations.
- Email 2 (on dispatch): Shipping confirmation with tracking link.
- Email 3 (7–14 days after delivery): Review request. Easy link to leave a review.
- Email 4 (30 days after purchase): Cross-sell. “Customers who bought X also love Y.”
Benchmark: Review email generates 10–25% review submission rate when timed correctly.
Flow 5: Win-Back Series (3 Emails)
Triggered when a customer hasn’t purchased in 90–180 days (set this threshold based on your typical repeat purchase window).
- Email 1 (day 1 of win-back): “We miss you.” What’s new. Soft re-engagement.
- Email 2 (day 7): Your best offer. Time-limited discount or exclusive deal for lapsed customers.
- Email 3 (day 14): “Last chance.” Final offer. After this, move them to suppressed segment.
Benchmark: 5–8% of lapsed customers reactivated per win-back cycle. Don’t email unengaged contacts beyond this — it hurts deliverability.
Flow 6: Replenishment Reminder
For consumable products (skincare, supplements, coffee, pet food), triggered X days after purchase based on the typical consumption cycle. “Running low on your [product]? Time to reorder.”
Set the timing based on product size and typical usage. A 30-day supply should trigger a reminder at day 25. This single flow can drive 15–25% of repeat purchase revenue for consumable brands.
Platform Recommendations
Klaviyo is the gold standard for Shopify email flows. Deep integration, powerful segmentation, pre-built flow templates. Use Klaviyo if your email revenue is or will be significant.
Shopify Email is built-in and free up to 10,000 emails/month. Good for basics, but lacks the segmentation depth and flow logic of Klaviyo.
Omnisend is a middle-ground option with email + SMS flows, good for stores not ready to pay Klaviyo prices.
Getting Started: Priority Order
If you’re building flows from scratch, prioritise: (1) Welcome series, (2) Abandoned cart, (3) Post-purchase, (4) Win-back. These four alone can increase email revenue by 40–60% over broadcasts-only. Add browse abandonment and replenishment once the core four are running and optimised.
