Why SMS Marketing Deserves a Place in Your Shopify Stack
SMS open rates are 98% — compared to 20–25% for email. Text messages are read within 3 minutes of receipt on average. For time-sensitive offers, flash sales, and abandoned cart recovery, no channel reaches customers faster or more reliably.
SMS marketing is still underused in ecommerce, which means lower competition, higher engagement, and better ROI compared to fully saturated channels. For Shopify stores, it’s not a replacement for email but a powerful complement — covering the moments email misses.
What Types of Messages Work in SMS Marketing
What Works Well
- Flash sales and limited-time offers — “24 hours only: 20% off everything. Shop now: [link]” — immediacy is SMS’s superpower
- Abandoned cart recovery — SMS abandoned cart texts outperform email in some categories, especially for mobile-first shoppers
- Shipping and delivery notifications — High open rates because customers actively want this information
- Back-in-stock alerts — “Your saved item is back: [product name]. Shop now before it sells out: [link]”
- VIP subscriber exclusives — Early access to new products, subscriber-only discount before email list sees it
- Post-purchase check-ins — Simple “How’s your order?” 7 days after delivery builds goodwill and drives reviews
What Works Poorly
- Long promotional messages — SMS is short. Every message should be under 160 characters or two segments maximum.
- Generic brand messages — “Happy Monday from Brand!” texts get unsubscribes, not clicks
- High frequency without value — More than 2–3 texts per week will trigger opt-outs unless every message is genuinely valuable
Growing Your SMS Subscriber List
- Pop-up capture — After your email pop-up, offer a phone number field with a separate SMS-specific incentive (“Text subscribers get 24hr early access to sales”)
- Checkout opt-in — Add SMS consent checkbox at checkout. Shopify handles this natively with compliant consent language.
- Email-to-SMS migration — Send an email campaign inviting existing email subscribers to also sign up for SMS with an exclusive offer
- Keyword campaigns — “Text DISCOUNT to [number] to get 15% off” — promoted on product packaging, social posts, and stories
Compliance: UK and US Rules
UK (PECR and GDPR)
In the UK, you need explicit opt-in consent to send marketing texts. Pre-ticked boxes are not valid consent. The opt-in must clearly explain what they’re signing up for. Include your brand name in every message. Always provide an opt-out (STOP) instruction. Keep consent records — you need to prove consent if challenged.
US (TCPA and CTIA)
Written consent required before sending marketing texts. Must include brand name, message frequency, terms and conditions, and STOP opt-out instructions. Must honour opt-outs within 10 business days. No texts before 8am or after 9pm in the recipient’s local timezone.
Both UK and US: never buy SMS lists. You can only text customers who have explicitly opted in to your brand’s SMS programme.
SMS Marketing Apps for Shopify
- Klaviyo — If you’re already using Klaviyo for email, their SMS add-on is the easiest integration. Manage email and SMS campaigns, flows, and list growth in one platform. US and UK support.
- Omnisend — Email + SMS on one platform. Cheaper than Klaviyo at lower volumes. Good for stores under £500K/year.
- SMSBump (now Yotpo SMS) — Shopify-native SMS platform with strong automation and segmentation. US-focused but has UK support.
- Postscript — SMS-first platform. Very strong abandoned cart and pop-up tools. US-focused.
SMS Revenue Benchmarks
Typical SMS programme performance for a Shopify store:
- Revenue per send (promotional texts): £0.05–£0.20 per subscriber
- Abandoned cart SMS recovery rate: 8–15%
- Opt-out rates per campaign: 0.5–2% (higher opt-outs signal over-messaging or poor content)
A list of 2,000 SMS subscribers with 2 promotional sends per month at £0.10/subscriber generates £400/month in attributable revenue — with minimal ongoing work once flows are configured. As your list grows, this scales linearly.
