The Shopify App Problem
The average Shopify store has 6–10 apps installed. Many have 20+. Each app adds scripts to your storefront, charges a monthly fee, and creates potential conflicts with other apps. The cumulative effect: slower page loads, higher monthly costs, and a theme that breaks in unexpected ways when apps interact.
Here’s how to audit your app stack, decide what to keep, and safely remove what you don’t need.
The Apps You Actually Need
Essential (Most Stores)
- Email marketing platform — Klaviyo, Omnisend, or Shopify Email. One only.
- Product reviews — Judge.me (affordable), Stamped.io, or Yotpo. One only.
- SEO app — Only needed if your theme lacks meta tag control. Most OS 2.0 themes don’t need a separate SEO app.
- Customer service / helpdesk — Gorgias or Zendesk if you have enough ticket volume to justify it.
- Returns management — Loop Returns or Return Prime if you process 50+ returns/month.
Category-Specific Essentials
- Subscription products — Recharge or Skio (only if you sell subscriptions)
- Upsell / cross-sell — Frequently Bought Together or ReConvert (only if Shopify’s native upsells are insufficient)
- Loyalty programme — Smile.io or LoyaltyLion (only if retention is a current focus)
- Size guides — Only needed if your theme doesn’t support metafield-based custom content
- Wishlist — Wishlist Plus (only if your audience has high browse-to-return behaviour)
Apps That Are Frequently Unnecessary
- Countdown timers — Rarely improve conversion rates significantly. Often look cheap and reduce trust. Shopify’s native scheduling + announcement bars handle sale urgency.
- Currency converters (third-party) — Shopify Markets handles this natively on current plans. Third-party currency apps add unnecessary scripts.
- Social share buttons — Shares from product pages are negligible for most stores. Don’t add scripts for zero revenue impact.
- Spin-to-win pop-ups — Work for some brands, feel gimmicky for others. Test before committing to the app subscription.
- SEO apps that “fix” everything — Most make minor adjustments to meta tags that you can do manually or that don’t significantly impact rankings. Check if the app is adding real value.
- Duplicate functionality apps — Many stores have both Klaviyo pop-ups AND a separate pop-up app. Or both Google Channel AND a separate product feed app. Duplicates waste money and can create conflicts.
How to Audit Your Current App Stack
- Step 1: List every installed app and its monthly cost
- Step 2: For each app, identify the last time you used it or got revenue from it
- Step 3: Check if a native Shopify feature now handles what the app was installed for
- Step 4: Check for duplicate functionality (two apps doing the same thing)
- Step 5: Run a PageSpeed Insights test to see your current load time baseline before removing anything
Removing Apps Safely
Uninstalling an app from the Shopify App Store does NOT automatically remove its code from your theme. Many apps inject scripts into your theme files during installation, and these scripts remain after uninstalling — still loading on every page, still slowing your store.
After uninstalling each app:
- Go to Online Store > Themes > Edit code
- Search for the app’s name or any code snippets it mentions in its uninstallation documentation
- Remove the leftover code snippets from theme.liquid and any other modified files
If you’re not comfortable editing theme code, consider hiring a Shopify developer for a half-day clean-up. A technical app audit typically improves PageSpeed scores by 10–20 points and reduces monthly app costs by £50–200/month for stores that have accumulated app bloat over time.
