Why Klaviyo Setup Matters More Than You Think
Many Shopify stores install Klaviyo, connect it to their store, and start sending emails — without configuring the deeper settings that make Klaviyo genuinely powerful. Proper Klaviyo setup unlocks accurate segmentation, reliable flow triggering, and better deliverability. This guide covers the full setup, not just the basic connection.
Step 1: Install and Connect
- Install the Klaviyo app from the Shopify App Store
- Log in or create your Klaviyo account
- Authorise the connection — Klaviyo will request access to your Shopify store data
- Klaviyo will begin syncing your historical customer and order data (this can take several hours for large stores)
Step 2: Configure Sync Settings
In Klaviyo > Integrations > Shopify, review these settings:
- Sync historical data: Enable this to pull in past orders and customers for segmentation from day one
- Subscribe customers: Choose whether customers who purchase are automatically subscribed to your Klaviyo list. Best practice: subscribe them to a “customers” list but NOT your marketing list unless they’ve explicitly opted in to marketing.
- Customer profile creation: Enable this so Klaviyo creates profiles for all customers, not just email subscribers
- Abandoned checkout sync: Ensure this is enabled — Klaviyo needs Shopify’s checkout events to trigger abandoned cart flows
Step 3: List Structure
Set up your Klaviyo list structure correctly from the start:
- Newsletter List: Your main marketing list. Only subscribers who’ve actively opted in to marketing emails.
- Transactional customers: People who’ve bought but haven’t opted in to marketing. Send transactional emails only (order confirmation, shipping) — not promotional emails.
- SMS subscribers: Separate from email. Explicit SMS consent required.
Sending marketing emails to customers who never opted in to marketing is non-compliant with GDPR. Keep your marketing list clean from the start.
Step 4: Set Up Key Flows
Klaviyo’s flow library has pre-built templates. Activate and customise these four immediately:
- Welcome Series — Triggered when someone joins your Newsletter list
- Abandoned Cart — Triggered by the “Started Checkout” Shopify event
- Post-Purchase — Triggered by the “Placed Order” Shopify event
- Win-Back — Triggered when a customer hasn’t purchased in 90+ days
Customise each flow’s emails with your brand colours, logo, and copy before activating. Klaviyo’s default templates are functional but generic — spending 2–3 hours customising them significantly improves performance.
Step 5: Tracking and Attribution
Klaviyo’s attribution window defaults to 5 days click, 1 day open. This means a purchase within 5 days of clicking an email is attributed to that email.
Consider adjusting based on your purchase cycle: for daily-purchase consumables, 5 days might be too long (inflating email attribution). For high-consideration purchases (furniture, jewellery), you might extend the window to 14 days. Consistent attribution settings matter most — pick a setting and keep it rather than changing it frequently.
Step 6: Segments to Create on Day One
- Active subscribers — Opened or clicked an email in the last 90 days
- VIP customers — Placed 3+ orders or spent £X+ lifetime
- First-time buyers — Purchased exactly once in the last 30 days (targets for second-purchase campaigns)
- At-risk customers — Purchased before but not in the last 60 days (for win-back campaigns)
- Browse abandoners — Viewed product pages but haven’t purchased (for browse abandonment flow)
These five segments cover your core email marketing use cases. As your list grows, add more granular segments (by product category, by gender, by discount vs non-discount buyers) to further personalise your campaigns.
Common Klaviyo Setup Mistakes
- Not setting up double opt-in (results in poor list quality and deliverability issues)
- Sending campaigns from the default Klaviyo subdomain instead of your own sending domain (hurts brand trust and deliverability)
- Not suppressing unengaged subscribers before large campaign sends
- Leaving default flow delays (Klaviyo’s default abandoned cart delay is 4 hours — consider reducing to 1 hour for faster recovery)
