What Shopify Markets Actually Does
Shopify Markets is a built-in feature that lets you manage international commerce from a single Shopify store. Instead of duplicating your store for each country — which is expensive, hard to maintain, and SEO-fragmenting — Markets lets you set per-country prices, display localised currencies, translate content, and manage duties and taxes, all from one admin.
For UK-based Shopify merchants looking to expand to the US, EU, Australia, or UAE, Markets reduces the technical lift of going global from months of development to a few days of configuration.
Markets vs Shopify Payments for Multi-Currency
Multi-currency display (showing USD to US visitors) does not require Markets — it works with Shopify Payments alone. Markets adds the operational layer: per-market pricing, market-specific domains or subfolders, market-level product availability, and localised checkout experiences.
Use multi-currency alone if you just want to display local prices but sell from one base currency. Use Markets when you want different prices, different product catalogues, or different tax handling per country.
Setting Up Your First Market
Go to Settings → Markets in your Shopify admin. You will see your Primary Market (your home country) and an option to add new markets. Click “Add market”, name it (e.g. “United States”), and select the countries to include. Shopify will automatically detect visitor location and show the appropriate market experience.
For each market, configure: currency (what customers pay in), language (translate storefront content), pricing (percentage markup, rounded prices, or manual price lists), domain/subfolder structure (example.com/en-us or us.example.com), and payment methods available in that region.
Pricing Strategy for Multiple Markets
You have three pricing options per market. First, automatic conversion: Shopify converts your GBP prices to local currency at current exchange rates. Second, percentage adjustment: apply a markup or markdown to all products in a market (e.g. +15% for international to cover higher fulfilment costs). Third, manual price lists: set specific prices per product per market for precise control.
For most growing stores, percentage adjustment with rounding rules (e.g. round to nearest $0.99) is the most efficient starting point. Switch to manual price lists only when you have specific pricing requirements — such as meeting competitive price points in a particular market.
Duties and Import Taxes
Since Brexit, UK merchants selling to EU customers need to handle VAT on orders under €150. Shopify Markets with DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) automatically calculates and collects duties at checkout, removing the surprise charges that cause abandoned deliveries and customer complaints.
Enable “Collect duties and import taxes at checkout” in your market settings. Shopify uses HS codes from your product details to calculate accurate duties. This requires adding HS codes to your products — time-consuming but worth it for markets where customs surprises are common (EU, Australia, Canada).
Domain Structure for International SEO
Google recommends country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs like .us, .de) or subfolders (/en-us, /de) for international SEO over subdomains (us.example.com). Shopify Markets supports subfolders natively, which are easier to implement and maintain for most stores. Subfolders inherit domain authority from the main domain, which helps new markets rank faster.
Translation and Localisation
Shopify Translate and Adapt (free app) lets you translate storefront content per market. For markets where you are selling in the same language but with different terminology (UK vs US English), use it to adjust spelling and vocabulary. For full language translation, Shopify supports up to 20 languages on the Advanced plan.
When Markets Makes Sense
- You are already getting international traffic and want to reduce friction
- You want to stop losing EU orders to unexpected duties
- You want to price competitively in specific markets without manual intervention
- You are expanding to markets where English is not the primary language
