How to Use This Shopify SEO Audit

Run this checklist quarterly or after any major theme or app change. SEO issues on Shopify often compound — a duplicate content problem caused by a new app can erode months of ranking gains before you notice. This 30-point audit covers the technical, structural, and on-page factors that most directly impact Shopify store rankings.

Technical SEO (10 Checks)

  • SSL certificate is valid and all pages load over HTTPS
  • www and non-www both redirect to the same canonical URL
  • robots.txt exists and does not block important pages (check at yourstore.com/robots.txt)
  • XML sitemap exists at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml and contains all key URLs
  • Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
  • No duplicate content from ?variant= URL parameters (Shopify creates these for product variants)
  • Canonical tags on all product and collection pages point to the correct URL
  • No redirect chains (A → B → C should be A → C)
  • PageSpeed mobile score above 60
  • Structured data (Product schema with reviews) passes Google’s Rich Results Test

Site Structure (5 Checks)

  • Homepage links directly to your most important collections
  • All products are accessible within 3 clicks from the homepage
  • Collection pages exist for each major product category
  • Breadcrumb navigation is present on product and collection pages
  • No orphan pages (pages with zero internal links pointing to them)

On-Page SEO (10 Checks)

  • Homepage title tag contains your brand name and a primary keyword
  • All collection pages have unique title tags with target keywords
  • All product pages have unique title tags (not “Product Title | Store Name” default)
  • Meta descriptions are set for homepage, collections, and top products
  • H1 tags exist on all pages (only one per page)
  • Product descriptions are at least 200 words of unique content (not manufacturer copy-paste)
  • Collection pages have descriptive text above or below the product grid
  • Image alt text is filled in for all product images
  • Internal links exist between related products and collections
  • Blog posts are published regularly and internally linked to relevant products

Content Quality (5 Checks)

  • No pages with duplicate or near-duplicate content
  • No thin pages (collection pages with fewer than 5 products and no description text)
  • Product descriptions answer common customer questions (not just bullet specs)
  • Blog content targets informational keywords your customers search
  • No placeholder content visible on any public page

Quick Wins to Prioritise

If you can only fix five things from this list, prioritise: unique meta titles and descriptions on all key pages, image alt text completion, structured data for product reviews, internal linking between blog content and products, and canonical tag verification. These five changes have the highest impact-to-effort ratio in a typical Shopify store audit.
