Why Product Feed Quality Determines Shopping Performance
Google Shopping does not use keyword bids in the traditional sense — it matches your products to relevant searches using the data in your product feed. A well-optimised feed appears for more relevant searches, generates higher click-through rates, and converts at higher rates. A poorly optimised feed — truncated titles, missing GTINs, low-quality images, vague descriptions — appears for fewer searches and costs more per click. Feed optimisation is the highest-ROI activity in Google Shopping management for most Shopify stores.
Product Title Optimisation
The product title is the single most important element in your feed. Google uses the title to match products to search queries. Include in your title (in order of importance): brand name, primary keyword/product type, key differentiating attribute (colour, size, material), and specific variant details. Example: “Nike Air Max 270 Men’s Running Shoes White/Grey Size 10 UK” rather than “Air Max 270”.
Keep titles under 150 characters (Google truncates at approximately 70 in display). Front-load the most important keywords — truncated titles lose the end. Avoid promotional language (“Buy now!”, “Best price”) in titles — these are against Merchant Center policy and trigger disapprovals.
Image Requirements
Google Shopping has strict image requirements. Primary image: white or light grey background, product only (no lifestyle, no models for most categories — apparel is an exception), minimum 800×800px (1200×1200px recommended), no watermarks, no text overlays, no borders. Non-compliant images are one of the most common reasons for product disapproval in Merchant Center. Run a monthly image audit to identify products with non-compliant images before they affect impression share.
GTINs and Structured Product Data
Troubleshooting Feed Disapprovals
In Google Merchant Center, the Diagnostics section shows disapproved products and the specific violation. Common issues: price mismatch (feed price differs from landing page price — update your Shopify prices and re-sync the feed), availability mismatch (feed says “in stock” but landing page shows sold out), missing required attributes (GTIN required but not in feed), and image policy violations. Address disapprovals systematically — each disapproved product is revenue lost to competitors whose products remain eligible.
