Why Digital Products Are High-Margin Shopify Revenue

Digital products have near-zero cost of goods and zero fulfilment cost — every sale after the first is essentially pure margin. A template pack, an ebook, or a course that sells for £49 costs nothing to deliver after you have created it once. For Shopify store owners, adding digital products to a physical product store is one of the most capital-efficient revenue additions available: no inventory, no shipping, no logistics.

Types of Digital Products for Shopify

Downloads: PDF guides, ebooks, recipe books, templates (design, spreadsheet, document), patterns (sewing, knitting, crochet), printables (planners, worksheets, wall art), presets (Lightroom, VSCO, Adobe), and digital art. Online courses and workshops: video-based courses, webinar replays, masterclasses. Digital services: coaching session packs (delivered via Calendly booking after purchase), audit templates, strategy frameworks. Licences: stock photography, fonts, illustration packs, software tools.

Setting Up Digital Downloads

Install the Shopify Digital Downloads app (free, by Shopify). Create a product, set “Requires shipping” to off. In the Digital Downloads app, attach your file (PDF, ZIP, MP4, etc.) to the product. When a customer purchases, they receive an automated email with a secure download link. Download links are time-limited (configurable — typically 48 hours to 30 days) and limited to a set number of downloads to prevent unlimited sharing.

For larger file sizes or more sophisticated delivery (course platforms, video hosting), use Sky Pilot or SendOwl which handle large file delivery, DRM (digital rights management), and streaming for video content.

Pricing Digital Products

Price digital products based on value delivered, not production cost. An ebook that helps a business owner save 10 hours per week is worth hundreds of pounds — pricing it at £9.99 undervalues it and attracts a price-sensitive buyer who is less likely to implement and get value. Price digital products at what a paying customer would pay for the outcome they receive, anchored to alternatives (a consultant charging £500/hour for the same advice justifies a £149 guide price).

Tax on Digital Products

UK VAT applies to digital products sold to UK customers. If you sell to EU customers, EU VAT rules apply on digital products sold to consumers (OSS registration may be required). Shopify Payments and Shopify’s tax system handle UK VAT automatically. For international digital sales, consult a VAT accountant on your specific obligations — the rules differ significantly between B2B and B2C digital product sales across jurisdictions.
