Why Google Merchant Centre Is the Engine of Your Shopping Ads

Google Merchant Centre (GMC) is the platform where you submit your product catalogue for use in Google Shopping ads, Buy on Google (where available), and free product listings. Think of it as the bridge between your Shopify store and Google’s advertising ecosystem. Without a healthy Merchant Centre account, you cannot run Shopping ads — and without an optimised Merchant Centre account, your Shopping ads will underperform no matter how much you spend.

Many Shopify store owners treat GMC as a one-time setup step and never return to it. This is a costly mistake. GMC requires ongoing maintenance: product feeds drift out of compliance, policy requirements evolve, and feed quality directly impacts the auctions you are eligible to enter and the CPCs you pay. This guide covers both initial setup and the ongoing optimisation practices that separate high-performing Shopify Shopping advertisers from those who leave money on the table.

Creating and Configuring Your GMC Account

Start at merchants.google.com and create an account. Use your business email address, not a personal Gmail. During setup, you will be asked to:

  • Provide your business name: Use your legal trading name or brand name exactly as it appears on your Shopify store. Inconsistency can trigger misrepresentation reviews.
  • Select your country: This is your country of business (where your business is registered and operates), not the countries you sell to. Selling internationally is configured separately under “Target countries” in your feed settings.
  • Choose your business model: Select “Online store” for a standard Shopify store. If you sell on multiple platforms, you can add additional feeds later.

After creating your account, complete the Business Information section fully. Missing contact information (phone number, physical address), an incomplete returns policy page, or a missing privacy policy are among the most common reasons new GMC accounts receive misrepresentation warnings or suspensions. Your Shopify store must have a clearly accessible Returns/Refund Policy page, Privacy Policy page, and Contact Us page before you link it to GMC.

Verifying and Claiming Your Shopify Domain

GMC requires that you verify ownership of your Shopify domain before products can be approved. There are three verification methods:

  • HTML tag (recommended for most Shopify stores): Google provides a meta tag to paste into the <head> of your theme. In Shopify, go to Online Store → Themes → Edit Code → theme.liquid, and paste the meta tag inside the <head> section before the closing tag. Save, then complete verification in GMC.
  • Google Analytics: If you have Google Analytics 4 installed on your Shopify store with the same Google account, you can verify via GA4. Simplest option if GA4 is already configured.
  • Google Tag Manager: If GTM is installed on your store, use GTM verification. This works well for stores already using GTM for other tracking.

After verifying, you must also claim your domain. Verification proves you can edit the site; claiming asserts ownership of the domain for GMC purposes. The “Claim” button appears in GMC after verification completes.

Configuring Shipping Settings in GMC

Shipping settings in GMC are separate from your Shopify shipping configuration. Google needs accurate shipping cost information to display total landed prices in Shopping results. Inaccurate or missing shipping settings are one of the top causes of Shopping ad disapprovals.

Navigate to Settings → Shipping and delivery in GMC. Create a shipping service for each country you ship to. For each service, specify: service name, delivery country, currency, delivery times (minimum and maximum days), and cost structure (flat rate, free shipping, order weight-based, or tiered by order value).

If you offer free shipping above a threshold (e.g., free shipping on orders over £30), configure this as a tiered rule in GMC. If the shipping cost in GMC does not match what shoppers see at checkout on your Shopify store, this constitutes a price mismatch and can lead to disapprovals or account warnings. Review your GMC shipping settings quarterly and after any changes to your Shopify shipping rates.

Setting Up Your Product Feed via the Google & YouTube Shopify App

The Google & YouTube app (available in the Shopify App Store at no cost) is the standard method for syncing your Shopify catalogue to GMC. Once installed and connected to your Google account:

  • The app creates a primary feed in GMC automatically
  • Products sync in real time as you make changes in Shopify
  • The app passes product IDs, enabling dynamic remarketing
  • Conversion tracking is deployed automatically when you link a Google Ads account

After the initial sync (which can take 24–72 hours for large catalogues), check the Products tab in GMC to see your approval status. Do not launch Shopping campaigns until at least 90% of your products are approved and active.

Diagnosing and Fixing the Most Common GMC Disapprovals

The Diagnostics tab in GMC is your most important daily check. Here are the most frequent disapproval types and their Shopify-specific fixes:

Price Mismatch

GMC crawls your product pages and checks that the price shown in your feed matches the price on your live page. Common causes in Shopify: promotional prices active in Shopify but not reflected in the feed, currency conversion rounding, or scripts that modify displayed prices after page load (e.g., dynamic pricing apps). Fix by ensuring Shopify prices are accurate, checking that any pricing apps export correct prices to the feed, and verifying that compare-at prices are not being misinterpreted as current prices.

Missing GTINs

For branded products, Google requires GTINs (barcodes). If you resell branded products without providing GTINs, your products receive limited impression share. Add barcodes to your Shopify product variant data under Inventory → Barcode (ISBN, UPC, GTIN) in each product. For your own manufactured products, add the attribute identifier_exists: FALSE via a supplemental feed rule in GMC.

Image Policy Violations

GMC prohibits product images with promotional overlays (“SALE”, “20% OFF”), watermarks, borders, or placeholder images. For Shopping, images must show the product clearly, ideally on a white or neutral background. Fix by removing any text overlays from product images in Shopify and re-triggering a feed crawl by making a minor product edit.

Landing Page Not Accessible

Google’s bots cannot crawl your product pages. Common causes: Shopify store is password-protected (development mode), your robots.txt blocks Googlebot, or individual product pages return 404 or 301 redirect loops. Ensure your store is fully publicly accessible and check your Shopify robots.txt settings.

Advanced Feed Optimisation — Supplemental Feeds and Feed Rules

GMC’s Feed Rules feature allows you to transform your primary feed data without modifying Shopify. This is powerful for optimisation without touching your store’s backend. Common feed rule applications:

  • Title enhancement: Prepend brand name to all product titles automatically
  • Custom label population: Tag products as “high-margin”, “bestseller”, or “seasonal” based on product type or category
  • GTIN supplementation: Add GTINs via a supplemental spreadsheet feed for products where you have the barcode but Shopify does not export it correctly
  • Category assignment: Override Google product categories for products that the auto-classifier assigns incorrectly

Supplemental feeds let you add or overwrite specific attributes without replacing your primary feed. Create a Google Sheet with your product IDs and the attributes you want to add or modify, then register it as a supplemental feed in GMC with a fetch schedule. This is ideal for bulk title rewrites, adding GTINs, or applying custom labels.

Free Product Listings — The Underused GMC Feature

Since 2020, Google has allowed free product listings in the Shopping tab for all Merchant Centre users. These are not paid ads — they are organic product results that appear in the Shopping tab of Google Search. While they generate significantly less volume than paid Shopping ads, they are completely free and require zero additional setup if your GMC account is healthy. Ensure “Surfaces across Google” is enabled in your GMC feed settings to participate in free listings. For stores with strong product feeds, free listings can generate 10–20% additional traffic at no cost.
