The average Shopify store converts at 1.5 to 3%. If yours is below 1%, you are losing the majority of your hard-won traffic without a sale. The good news: most conversion rate problems are fixable with specific, targeted changes. Here are 15 tested fixes that move the number, starting with the highest-impact ones.
1. Speed Up Your Store — Fast
Every extra second your store takes to load costs you 7% in conversions. Test your current speed at Google PageSpeed Insights. Compress all product images using Crush.pics or ImageOptim. Remove unused Shopify apps — every app adds script to your page. Switch to a lightweight theme if yours is bloated.
2. Add Trust Signals Above the Fold
First-time visitors do not trust you yet. Show trust signals prominently on your homepage and product pages: Secure checkout badges, money-back guarantee, verified reviews count, “X happy customers,” and media mentions if you have them. These signals reduce the anxiety that stops first-time buyers from converting.
3. Make Your Add-to-Cart Button Impossible to Miss
Your Add-to-Cart button should be the most visually prominent element on every product page. Use a high-contrast colour that stands out from your theme. Make sure it is visible without scrolling on mobile. Add a sticky Add-to-Cart bar that appears as the visitor scrolls — this is available as a feature in many Shopify themes or via apps like Sticky Add to Cart Booster.
4. Show More Product Images and a Video
Buyers cannot touch or try your product before purchasing. More images reduce uncertainty and increase confidence. Show at minimum: front view, back view, scale reference (next to a hand or common object), lifestyle shot in use, and a close-up of texture or detail. Adding a 15 to 30 second product video increases conversions by 80% on average.
5. Write Product Descriptions That Answer Objections
Most product descriptions describe what a product is, not why the customer should buy it. Write descriptions that address the top 3 objections your customers have before buying. Think: “Is this durable?” “Will this fit me?” “Is this worth the price?” Answer these directly in the copy and you eliminate the reasons people leave without buying.
6. Display Reviews on Every Product Page
Products with reviews convert at 270% higher than products without. Add a review app — Judge.me (free plan available), Yotpo, or Loox for photo reviews. Place reviews below the product description and include a review summary widget showing average rating near the top of the page.
7. Simplify Your Checkout Process
Every extra step in checkout reduces conversion. Enable Shopify’s accelerated checkout buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay) — these allow buyers to complete purchase in one tap using saved payment details. Remove unnecessary form fields. Allow guest checkout — forcing account creation before purchase is one of the top causes of checkout abandonment.
8. Be Upfront About Shipping Costs
Unexpected shipping costs at checkout are the number one reason for cart abandonment. Show shipping information on product pages — either “Free shipping on all orders” or “Shipping calculated at checkout — typically ₹99.” Surprises at checkout kill trust instantly.
9. Add Live Chat
Visitors who chat convert at 3 to 5x the rate of those who do not. Add a live chat widget — Tidio and Crisp both have free plans. Even if you cannot respond in real time, set up chatbot answers for common pre-purchase questions (sizing, shipping times, return policy).
10. Use Urgency and Scarcity Genuinely
Real urgency converts. Showing “Only 3 left in stock” when you genuinely have limited stock is effective and honest. Running a 24-hour sale with a countdown timer works well for impulse categories. Do not manufacture fake urgency — buyers notice and it destroys trust permanently.
11. Offer a Clear Returns Policy
A generous, clearly stated returns policy removes one of the biggest purchase barriers. 67% of shoppers check the returns policy before buying. Make it prominent — add it to your product pages, checkout page, and navigation footer. “30-day hassle-free returns” as a trust badge on the product page alone lifts conversions noticeably.
12. Fix Your Mobile Experience
Over 60% of your Shopify traffic is from mobile phones. Test your store on a real mobile device and fix: text that is too small to read, buttons that are too close together to tap accurately, images that take more than 3 seconds to load, and forms that are frustrating to fill in on a keyboard. Use Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test to identify specific issues.
13. Reduce Page Clutter
Too many options, pop-ups, and distracting elements pull visitors away from buying. A clean, focused product page converts better than a feature-packed one. Remove anything that does not directly help the customer decide to buy or feel confident about the purchase.
14. Add “Recently Viewed” and Upsell Sections
Customers who browse multiple products are warming up to buying. Recently viewed sections help them find their way back. Product recommendations (“Customers who bought this also bought”) using apps like Frequently Bought Together increase average order value and give hesitant buyers more context about what works well together.
15. Run A/B Tests on Your Highest-Traffic Pages
Do not rely on guesswork — test changes scientifically. Tools like Optimizely or Neat A/B Testing let you show different versions of your page to different visitors and measure which converts better. Start with your highest-traffic product pages — even a 0.5% conversion improvement on a page getting 10,000 visits per month adds up to significant revenue.
