Every major ecommerce brand has a loyalty programme. But do they actually work for smaller brands, and is the investment worth it? The data is clear: well-designed loyalty programmes increase purchase frequency, average order value, and customer lifetime value. The key word is “well-designed” — a points programme nobody knows about or values is worse than no programme at all.
The Evidence: Do Loyalty Programmes Work?
The short answer is yes — with caveats. Research from Yotpo and LoyaltyLion consistently shows:
- Loyalty programme members have 25–40% higher average order value than non-members
- Members purchase 2.5–4x more frequently over a 12-month period
- Programme members have 4–6x higher customer lifetime value
- 65% of revenue at successful loyalty-programme brands comes from repeat customers
The caveat: these results require a programme that offers genuine, visible value — not a token programme that customers ignore.
Types of Loyalty Programmes
1. Points-Based Programmes
The most common format. Customers earn points for purchases, reviews, social shares, and referrals — and redeem them for discounts or free products. Simple to understand, easy to implement via apps like Smile.io, LoyaltyLion, or Yotpo.
Best for: Most ecommerce categories. Works particularly well for brands with repeat purchases (beauty, food, fashion).
2. Tiered (VIP) Programmes
Customers unlock higher tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold) based on annual spend. Each tier has escalating benefits: free shipping, early access, personal stylist, birthday gifts. Creates status aspiration that drives spending to reach the next tier.
Best for: Premium and lifestyle brands where status signals matter. Fashion, beauty, home décor.
3. Subscription/Paid Loyalty
Customers pay a monthly or annual fee for guaranteed benefits: free shipping on all orders, exclusive discounts, early access. Amazon Prime is the canonical example. For smaller brands, the equivalent is a “members club” with tangible, ongoing value.
Best for: High-frequency repurchase categories (coffee, skincare, supplements) where the subscription model makes sense.
4. Referral Programmes
Not technically a loyalty programme, but often combined with one. Customers refer friends and earn rewards when the friend makes a purchase. Referral programmes have some of the lowest acquisition costs in ecommerce because the customer does the selling. Referral from a trusted friend also converts at 3–5x the rate of paid acquisition.
How to Design a Loyalty Programme That Actually Works
- Make the value obvious and immediate. If a customer has to make 10 purchases before earning a usable reward, most will never see it. Offer an immediate benefit on programme join (welcome points, first purchase bonus) and a reachable first reward within 2–3 purchases.
- Communicate the programme everywhere. Product pages, checkout, post-purchase emails, account area, homepage. Customers can’t join or use a programme they don’t know exists.
- Give multiple earning opportunities beyond just purchases. Points for reviews, social shares, referrals, birthday registration, and app download all increase engagement between purchases.
- Make redemption effortless. If redeeming points requires contacting support, nobody will do it. Points should be redeemable at checkout with one click.
- Promote tier status and progress. “You’re 150 points away from Gold status” is a powerful motivator. Show progress prominently in the account area and post-purchase emails.
Loyalty Programme Apps for Shopify
- Smile.io: Most popular Shopify loyalty app. Clean UI, good integrations with Klaviyo and Shopify, free plan available. Best for most mid-market brands.
- LoyaltyLion: More advanced segmentation and Klaviyo integration. Good for brands wanting to use loyalty data in email flows. Mid-tier pricing.
- Yotpo Loyalty: Integrates tightly with Yotpo Reviews and SMS. Strong analytics. Higher price point, suits larger brands.
- BON Loyalty: Budget-friendly, clean design, good for brands starting their first loyalty programme.
A loyalty programme is one of the most defensible competitive advantages in ecommerce — a competitor can copy your products and undercut your price, but they can’t copy the points and status a customer has accumulated with your brand.
