Accessibility Is Good Business, Not Just Compliance
1 in 5 people in the UK has a disability of some kind. An inaccessible ecommerce store is literally preventing a fifth of your potential customers from buying. Beyond inclusion, accessibility and SEO share many technical foundations — alt text, semantic HTML structure, clear page headings, descriptive link text — so improving accessibility directly improves search rankings. And in most jurisdictions, web accessibility is increasingly a legal requirement under equality and disability discrimination law.
WCAG 2.1 AA: The Standard to Meet
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.1 Level AA is the accepted standard for ecommerce. It covers: Perceivable (can users perceive all content?), Operable (can users operate all interface elements?), Understandable (can users understand the interface?), Robust (can content be interpreted by assistive technologies?). Meeting AA doesn’t require a complete rebuild — most Shopify stores can achieve it with targeted improvements.
Critical Accessibility Fixes for Shopify Stores
- Alt text on all images — every product image needs descriptive alt text. “Red leather handbag with gold clasp” not “image1.jpg”. Shopify has an alt text field on every product image
- Colour contrast ratio — text must have 4.5:1 contrast ratio against background. Light grey text on white background is inaccessible and invisible to many users. Use Chrome’s DevTools or WebAIM Contrast Checker
- Keyboard navigation — all interactive elements (navigation, add to cart, checkout forms) must be accessible via keyboard tab/enter alone. Test by unplugging your mouse
- Focus indicators — visible focus ring on interactive elements. Many themes remove this for aesthetic reasons — it must be restored for accessibility
- Form labels — all form inputs need associated
<label>tags. Placeholder text alone is not accessible — it disappears when the user starts typing
Accessible Product Pages
- Variant selectors (size, colour) must be clearly labelled and keyboard accessible
- Error messages in checkout forms must describe what’s wrong, not just highlight the field in red
- Zoom-in on product images must work via keyboard, not just pinch-to-zoom
- Video content needs captions — auto-captions from YouTube/Vimeo work for basic compliance
Accessibility Audit Tools
Run automated checks: WAVE (wave.webaim.org), Axe DevTools (Chrome extension), Google Lighthouse accessibility audit. These catch 30–40% of accessibility issues automatically. The remaining 60% require manual testing — keyboard navigation walkthrough, screen reader testing (NVDA on Windows, VoiceOver on Mac), and testing with actual disabled users where possible.
