LTV: The Number That Changes How You Market

Customer Lifetime Value (LTV) is the total revenue a customer generates over their entire relationship with your store. Once you know your LTV, you know exactly how much you can afford to spend acquiring a new customer. If your LTV is £120, you can profitably spend £40 on acquisition (33% CAC:LTV ratio). Without knowing LTV, every marketing budget decision is a guess. With it, you’re making investment decisions with calculable returns.

Calculating Shopify LTV

Simple LTV formula: Average Order Value × Purchase Frequency × Customer Lifespan (in years). Example: £65 AOV × 2.5 purchases/year × 2.2 year average lifespan = £357 LTV. Shopify’s native analytics (Reports → Customers → Customer cohort analysis) shows repeat purchase rate and average order data. For more precise LTV calculation by acquisition channel, use Klaviyo’s LTV reporting or a custom GA4 analysis.

LTV by Acquisition Channel

Not all customers are equal. Email-acquired customers typically have 20–40% higher LTV than paid-social acquired customers. Organic search customers have the highest LTV of any channel (they searched for you — high intent). Knowing LTV by channel tells you where to invest: if paid social customers have £60 LTV and organic email customers have £120 LTV, investing in email list growth gives 2x the return on the same spend. Run this analysis quarterly.

Increasing LTV: The Four Levers

  • Increase average order value — upselling, cross-selling, free shipping thresholds, bundles. Every £5 increase in AOV compounds across the customer lifespan
  • Increase purchase frequency — post-purchase flows, loyalty programmes, subscription options, replenishment reminders
  • Extend customer lifespan — win-back campaigns, re-engagement flows, consistent email communication, loyalty tier benefits
  • Improve gross margin per order — reduce returns, shift product mix toward higher-margin items, reduce discount dependency

LTV-Based Customer Segmentation

Segment customers by LTV quartile and treat each differently: Top 25% (highest LTV) — VIP treatment, early access, personal outreach for major purchases. Second quartile — upsell into higher-frequency behaviour. Third quartile — targeted loyalty programme recruitment. Bottom 25% — high marketing efficiency (don’t spend much here; focus on the top). This segmentation ensures your highest-value customers receive proportionate investment.
