Why Segmentation Is the Biggest Email Revenue Lever

Sending the same email to everyone on your list is like running a TV ad that speaks to no one in particular. It converts at the average — which, for most stores, is below potential. Segmentation means sending different messages to different groups based on who they are and what they’ve done. The result: higher open rates, higher click rates, higher conversion, and better deliverability.

Klaviyo research shows segmented campaigns generate 3–5x more revenue per recipient than unsegmented broadcasts. Here’s how to build a segmentation strategy that actually impacts your bottom line.

The 7 Core Shopify Email Segments

1. Engaged Subscribers (Non-Buyers)

Subscribed but never purchased. Opened at least one email in the last 90 days. This is your warmest cold audience — they’re aware of your brand and interested. Campaign strategy: social proof, bestsellers, objection handling, time-limited offers.

2. One-Time Buyers

Purchased exactly once. The goal is the second purchase — statistically, customers who buy twice are significantly more likely to buy a third time. Campaign strategy: cross-sell based on first purchase, loyalty programme invitation, review request if not already collected.

3. Repeat Buyers (2–4 Purchases)

Loyal but not yet VIP. These customers like your brand and come back. Campaign strategy: new arrivals first access, loyalty tier upgrades, referral programme invitation.

4. VIP Customers (Top 20% by Spend)

Your highest-value customers. Treat them differently: early access to sales, exclusive products, personal notes, birthday offers. VIPs are also your best referral source — they evangelise your brand.

5. At-Risk Customers (Bought, Not Returning)

Bought within the last 12 months but haven’t purchased recently based on their typical repurchase frequency. Segment these customers before they fully lapse and run a targeted re-engagement campaign.

6. Lapsed Customers (90–180+ Days Since Last Purchase)

Feed these into your win-back flow. After the win-back sequence, suppress non-responders to protect deliverability.

7. Product Category Segments

If you sell across multiple categories (e.g., skincare + supplements + homeware), segment by purchase history so you’re promoting relevant products. Someone who’s only bought your skincare products doesn’t want your homeware newsletter.

Behavioural Segments to Add Next

  • High-intent browsers — viewed a product 3+ times without buying (Klaviyo event frequency filter)
  • Sale buyers only — only purchases during promotions; use to test full-price re-engagement
  • Mobile openers vs desktop openers — different creative formats perform better for each
  • High CLV predictors — Klaviyo’s predictive analytics flags customers likely to have high future value

Building Segments in Klaviyo

Klaviyo segments are dynamic — they update automatically as customers meet or stop meeting the criteria. To build a segment: Audience → Segments → Create Segment → add conditions. Key conditions available: purchased/not purchased, placed order X times, opened email in last X days, viewed product, total revenue, predicted CLV, location, custom properties.

Build your 7 core segments first, validate the sizes, then start sending targeted campaigns and measuring revenue per recipient against your baseline unsegmented campaigns.
