The Most Important Email Flow You Are Not Optimising
The welcome series is sent to subscribers at their highest engagement point — the moment they opted in. Open rates for welcome emails average 50–60%, compared to 20–30% for regular campaigns. Yet most Shopify stores send a single welcome email and move on. A five-email welcome series, sent over the first 14 days, can convert 5–12% of new subscribers into first-time buyers.
Email 1: The Welcome (Send Immediately)
This email has one job: deliver what you promised and make a strong first impression. If the subscriber opted in for a discount code, lead with the code immediately — do not bury it. Make the code easy to copy on mobile. Use your brand voice, include one clear call to action, and do not overload with products.
Subject line formula: deliver the value + hint at what is coming. Example: “Your 10% off code is inside (+ what to explore first)”. Keep the email short — 150–250 words. One hero image, one CTA button. Introduce your brand in a single sentence that captures your difference.
Email 2: Your Brand Story (Send Day 2)
New subscribers convert better when they feel a connection to your brand. Email 2 is your brand story — why you started, what you believe, who your products are made for. This is not a pitch email. The CTA can be soft: “Browse the collection” rather than “Buy now”.
Include founder photography if available. Authenticity outperforms polished stock imagery for brand story emails. Conversion-optimised brand story emails see 40% higher click rates than product-push alternatives.
Email 3: Best Sellers (Send Day 4)
By day four, subscribers who have not purchased are ready to see what is popular. Feature your three to five best-selling products with real reviews. Include star ratings and the number of reviews to add social proof. If you sell consumables, highlight your starter set or most-ordered bundle.
Subject line: “Our customers love these (see why)” or “The [Category] everyone keeps buying”. This email typically has the highest click-to-purchase rate in the welcome series.
Email 4: Social Proof and UGC (Send Day 7)
Share real customer stories. If you have video testimonials, embed a thumbnail that links to your reviews page. Share before-and-after photos, transformation stories, or results. Include specific numbers where possible — “Lost 8kg in 12 weeks” or “Saved £340 on groceries this month”.
This email reduces purchase anxiety for hesitant subscribers. People who are interested but unsure need to see others like them succeeding. The CTA here is “Read more stories” or “See all reviews”.
Email 5: Last Chance (Send Day 12–14)
If the subscriber still has not purchased, send a final urgency email. If you offered a discount in Email 1, remind them the code expires soon. If you did not offer a discount, this is the moment to make a one-time offer: “As a welcome gift, use WELCOME10 before it expires”.
Subject line: “Your discount expires at midnight” or “Last chance — your welcome offer ends tomorrow”. Keep the email brief. One product, one code, one CTA, one sentence of urgency. Do not apologise for the urgency — confidence sells.
Segmentation Rules
Exit subscribers from the welcome series the moment they make a purchase — do not send “buy now” emails to paying customers. In Klaviyo, add a flow filter: “Has not placed an order since starting this flow”. Move purchasers into your post-purchase series automatically.
