Exit-Intent Technology: How It Works on Shopify
Exit-intent technology detects the moment a visitor is about to leave your website — typically by tracking mouse movement toward the browser’s address bar or back button — and triggers a targeted popup in that split second before they go. On mobile, exit-intent is triggered by scroll-up behaviour or inactivity, since there’s no mouse to track.
Done correctly, exit-intent popups recover 2–5% of visitors who would otherwise leave without converting. On a store with 10,000 monthly visitors, that could mean 200–500 additional leads or direct purchases per month.
Done incorrectly, they’re annoying and damage the user experience. The difference is in the offer, the timing, and the targeting.
When Exit-Intent Popups Work (and When They Don’t)
They work when:
- The offer is genuinely valuable (free shipping, meaningful discount, free gift)
- They’re targeted specifically at high-intent pages (cart page, product pages) not every page
- They show only to first-time visitors or non-subscribers (not to people who’ve already opted in)
- The design is clean and the CTA is clear
- They appear only once per session, not repeatedly
They don’t work when:
- The offer is weak (“Join our newsletter for updates”)
- They fire on every page including the homepage and checkout
- The design is intrusive or hard to close
- They slow down the page (large images, unoptimised scripts)
- They target all visitors equally regardless of behaviour

What to Offer in a Shopify Exit-Intent Popup
The offer determines whether the popup converts or gets dismissed. Test these in order of friction vs. reward:
- Free shipping on this order — extremely effective if shipping cost was the abandonment reason. No email required — trigger discount automatically.
- 10% off first order — classic, works well for new visitors. Collect email, send code.
- Free gift with purchase — very high conversion but impacts margins. Works well for beauty, supplements, accessories.
- Save your cart (email to yourself) — low-friction, high-value for browsers. No commitment to buy — just capture the email for future recovery.
- Quiz or product finder — “Not sure which [product] is right for you?” captures emails while solving a problem. Particularly effective for fashion, beauty, and supplements.
Setting Up an Exit-Intent Popup on Shopify: Step by Step
Using Privy as an example (process is similar for other tools):
- Install Privy from the Shopify App Store and connect your Shopify store
- Create a new campaign → select “Popup” type
- Design your popup (use a template or build from scratch)
- Set Display Rules: trigger = “Exit Intent”, device = “Desktop” (separate campaign for mobile with scroll-based trigger)
- Set Audience rules: “Only show to visitors who have NOT previously subscribed” and “Have visited at least 1 page”
- Add page-level targeting if needed: “Only show on /cart” or “Only show on /collections/” pages
- Configure the follow-up: if email captured, trigger immediate welcome email with the discount code
- Set frequency: show maximum once per session, repeat after 30 days minimum
- A/B test your headline — run two variants for 2 weeks and keep the winner
Key Metrics to Track
- Trigger rate: Percentage of visitors who trigger the exit-intent. Target 15–25% of all visitors.
- Conversion rate: Percentage of triggered visitors who take the action. Target 5–15%.
- Email capture rate: For email capture campaigns, target 3–8% of all visitors.
- Revenue influenced: Compare purchase rates of visitors who saw vs. didn’t see the popup (available in most tools).
