Why Your About Page Is a Conversion Page
The About page is typically the 3rd or 4th most-visited page on a Shopify store. Visitors go there before purchasing to answer one question: can I trust these people? A compelling founder story builds trust in a way that no amount of features and benefits copy can. Customers buy from humans they believe in — especially when buying from an independent brand over a marketplace giant. Your About page is not a vanity page; it is a conversion page that supports every other part of your funnel.
The Origin Story Framework
Every compelling brand origin story has four elements. The Problem: what specific problem or frustration drove you to start this business? The more specific and relatable the problem, the stronger the story. The Attempt: what did you try first? Most founders tried an existing solution and found it inadequate — this sets up the “why we built something different” narrative. The Solution: what did you create and why is it different? The Outcome: what has changed as a result — for you and for customers?
Example structure: “After struggling to find [specific product type] that was [specific quality], I spent [time period] testing [number] alternatives and found every single one [specific problem]. So I created [product] to be [specific differentiator]. Since launching in [year], [specific result — X customers, Y countries, Z reviews].”
What to Include on the About Page
Founder photograph: non-negotiable. A store without a human face is a commodity. Show the real person behind the brand. Mission statement: one sentence that captures your “why”. Values: 3–4 specific values with evidence — not generic corporate values (“We value quality”) but specific commitments (“Every product is tested for 90 days before we sell it”). Social proof: number of customers, years in business, notable coverage. Team: if you have one, introduce them. This is especially powerful for customer service brands where who you are dealing with matters.
Writing Voice and Tone
Write your About page in first person. “I started this company because…” is more powerful than “The company was founded when…”. The passive voice removes the human. Avoid corporate language — “we are dedicated to delivering best-in-class solutions” says nothing. Write as you would speak. Have someone who has never read your brand story read the About page and tell you what they understand about why you exist — if they cannot summarise your “why” in one sentence, rewrite it.
Updating Your Story Over Time
Your origin story stays the same — the problem you solved and why. But your evidence evolves: update the customer count, add notable achievements, add new team members, share your journey. An About page that has not been updated since launch feels abandoned. A page that reflects genuine growth (“We started with 10 orders a month and now ship to 30 countries”) tells a compelling progress narrative that reinforces trust.
