Google Ads vs Meta Ads for Shopify: Which to Start With

Google Ads and Meta Ads serve different roles in the Shopify acquisition funnel. Google captures demand that already exists: people actively searching for what you sell. Meta creates demand: showing your product to people who do not yet know they want it. For most Shopify stores, start with Google Shopping if you sell products people actively search for. Start with Meta if your product needs explanation and discovery.

Setting Up Google Merchant Center

Google Shopping requires a Google Merchant Center account with your product feed synced. Install the Google and YouTube channel app on Shopify — it connects your product catalogue to Merchant Center automatically and updates when products change. Verify and claim your store domain in Merchant Center. Enable free listings first to test product feed quality before spending on ads.

Shopping Campaigns vs Performance Max

Standard Shopping campaigns give you full control: you set bids per product group, see search term reports, and optimise placement manually. Performance Max (PMax) uses Google’s machine learning to serve ads across Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, and Gmail with a single campaign. PMax is more automated with less manual control — Google optimises everything.

For new advertisers: start with Standard Shopping to understand what search terms convert, what products have the best ROAS, and which audiences perform. After 60–90 days of data, consider PMax with asset groups and audience signals fed from your Shopping learnings. PMax without data or proper asset groups often wastes budget on brand terms and irrelevant placements.

Conversion Tracking Setup

Accurate conversion tracking is the foundation of profitable Google Ads. Install the Google tag via Shopify Settings → Customer Events or Google Tag Manager. Track: purchase (with revenue value), add to cart, and begin checkout as micro-conversions. Import your primary conversion (purchase) into Google Ads as your target action.

Verify your conversion tracking is firing by placing a test order and checking the “Conversions” column in Google Ads within 24 hours. Misconfigured conversion tracking causes Google’s algorithm to optimise for the wrong signals, leading to wasted spend that can run for weeks before anyone notices.

ROAS Targets and Bidding Strategy

Calculate your target ROAS before launching. Formula: 1 / gross margin × desired margin multiple. At 50% gross margin and a target of spending no more than 20% of revenue on ads: target ROAS = 5x. Set your Google Ads bidding strategy to Target ROAS at this number. If you have fewer than 30 conversions per month, use manual CPC or Maximise Conversions until you have enough data for Target ROAS to function reliably.

Product Feed Optimisation

Your product feed is your ad creative for Shopping. Optimise: product titles (include primary keyword, brand, and key attribute — e.g. “Blue Running Shoes Men Lightweight Size 10”), product descriptions (200+ words of unique text), high-quality images, correct GTINs where available, and accurate pricing. Products with complete data outperform products with gaps. Run a Merchant Center diagnostics check weekly to catch feed errors before they pull products from Shopping.

Search Campaigns for Branded and High-Intent Terms

Bid on your own brand name — competitors likely already do. Brand search campaigns convert at 30–60% CVR and deliver 5–15x ROAS typically. Also target high-intent non-brand terms: “[product type] buy UK”, “[brand] alternative”, “[product] for [specific use case]”. Use exact and phrase match types, review search terms weekly, and add irrelevant terms as negative keywords aggressively in the first 60 days.
