Google Search Console is the single most important free tool for understanding how your Shopify store performs in organic search. Yet many merchants either skip setup entirely or connect it and never open it again. This guide covers verification, sitemap submission, and the reports that actually matter.
Verifying Your Shopify Store in GSC
The DNS TXT method is the most reliable for Shopify stores because it does not depend on theme files or analytics scripts. Log into your domain registrar, create a TXT record with the value Google provides, and wait up to 48 hours for propagation. In practice, verification usually completes within a few hours.
If your store uses a Shopify-managed domain (myshopify.com subdomain), use the HTML tag method via Shopify Admin > Online Store > Themes > Edit Code > theme.liquid, pasting the meta tag inside the <head> section.
Add both the www and non-www versions as separate properties, then set your preferred domain under Settings > Search appearance in GSC. Also add https://yourstore.myshopify.com as a separate property so you can monitor any traffic hitting the Shopify subdomain.
Submitting Your Shopify Sitemap
Shopify generates a sitemap automatically at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml. It includes product, collection, blog post, and page URLs. Navigate to GSC > Sitemaps, paste the URL, and submit. Google will begin crawling and indexing the listed URLs based on its own schedule.
Check back after 48 hours. The sitemap report will show total submitted URLs, discovered URLs, and any fetch errors. If the count looks low, check whether your sitemap is being blocked in robots.txt.
Reading the Coverage Report
The Coverage (now called Indexing) report groups URLs into four states: Error, Valid with warnings, Valid, and Excluded. The Excluded tab is often overlooked — it shows pages Google found but chose not to index, including canonicalised duplicates, noindex pages, and soft 404s. Shopify stores commonly see large numbers of paginated collection URLs in Excluded, which is expected behaviour.
Performance Report Metrics That Matter
The Performance report shows Impressions (how many times a URL appeared in search), Clicks, CTR (click-through rate), and average Position. Filter by page to identify product or collection pages with high impressions but low CTR — these are candidates for title tag and meta description improvements.

Common Shopify GSC Errors and Fixes
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Submitted URL blocked by robots.txt | /collections or /products in disallow rules | Review robots.txt in Shopify Admin and remove incorrect Disallow lines |
| Submitted URL returns soft 404 | Deleted product still in sitemap | Set up 301 redirects for removed products; Shopify does this automatically via Redirects |
| Duplicate without canonical tag | Shopify generates /products/handle and /collections/handle/products/handle | Shopify handles this natively with canonical tags; confirm theme outputs correct canonical |
| Crawled — currently not indexed | Thin content or low-value page | Improve page content quality or add noindex if page has no search value |
| Page with redirect | Sitemap contains old URLs that now redirect | Update sitemap by removing redirected URLs; Shopify auto-updates sitemap.xml |
FAQ
How long does it take for Shopify pages to appear in GSC after sitemap submission?
Google typically begins crawling submitted sitemaps within a few days, but full indexing of all URLs can take two to four weeks depending on your store’s crawl budget and domain authority.
Why does my Shopify sitemap show fewer URLs than my product count?
Shopify’s sitemap.xml uses a sitemap index structure with nested sitemaps for products, collections, pages, and blogs. If a product variant or hidden product is excluded, it will not appear. Ensure all products are set to active and not password-protected.
Should I connect Google Analytics and GSC to Shopify?
Yes. Connecting both allows you to see organic search performance data in Google Analytics and cross-reference it with GSC’s click and impression data. Link them via GSC Settings > Associations > Google Analytics.
