What Is Headless Shopify Commerce?

Traditional Shopify uses Shopify’s own storefront (Liquid templates) to display your store to customers. Headless commerce separates the “head” (the customer-facing frontend) from the “body” (the Shopify backend). Instead of Liquid, you build your storefront with a modern JavaScript framework (Next.js, Nuxt.js, Gatsby) that communicates with Shopify’s commerce infrastructure via the Storefront API.

The result: maximum frontend flexibility with Shopify handling the ecommerce complexity (checkout, payments, inventory, fulfilment) behind the scenes.

Benefits of Headless Shopify

  • Performance — React/Next.js frontends with static site generation can achieve sub-1-second page loads that Liquid-based themes can’t match
  • Design freedom — no constraints from Shopify’s theme architecture; build exactly what your brand requires
  • Omnichannel — the same Shopify backend can power your website, mobile app, kiosk, and any other sales channel through the same API
  • Personalisation at scale — easier to implement server-side personalisation, A/B testing frameworks, and dynamic content
  • Third-party integration — pull in content from a headless CMS (Contentful, Sanity), imagery from a DAM, and personalisation from a CDP — all in one storefront

The Very Real Drawbacks

  • Cost — headless development costs £30,000–£200,000+ depending on complexity. Ongoing development costs also increase significantly.
  • App compatibility — most Shopify apps are designed for Liquid storefronts. Headless stores lose most of the App Store’s turnkey functionality.
  • Theme editor gone — non-technical team members can no longer make content changes via Shopify’s drag-and-drop editor without custom CMS integration.
  • Infrastructure responsibility — you’re responsible for hosting and maintaining your frontend, adding operational complexity.
  • Checkout remains Shopify’s — even headless, you use Shopify’s checkout (on Shopify Plus you get more customisation). The checkout experience is still largely determined by Shopify.

Who Headless Is Actually Right For

Headless makes sense when:

  • You’re a Shopify Plus merchant doing £1M+/year with specific performance or design requirements that standard themes can’t meet
  • You need true omnichannel — the same product/content data feeding multiple surfaces (web, app, in-store)
  • Your development team has React/Next.js expertise and can maintain a custom frontend long-term
  • Your content team needs a more capable CMS than Shopify’s native content tools provide

For most Shopify stores under £1M/year, a heavily customised premium theme will outperform headless on ROI. Headless is a powerful tool for the right scale — not a shortcut to performance for stores that haven’t yet maximised their standard theme.
