The Health and Wellness Market on Shopify

Health and wellness is one of Shopify’s largest and fastest-growing categories. Supplements, fitness equipment, wellness products, and natural health items drive billions in DTC ecommerce annually. It is also one of the most regulated categories — making compliance knowledge a genuine competitive advantage. Brands that understand what they can and cannot claim market more effectively than competitors who either over-claim (risking enforcement) or under-claim (leaving conversion on the table).

UK Supplement Regulations

Food supplements in the UK are regulated by the Food Standards Agency under the Food Supplements (England) Regulations 2003. Key requirements: vitamins and minerals must be from approved forms and within safe upper levels, products must be labelled with daily recommended portion, a “Do not exceed the stated dose” advisory, and instructions to keep out of reach of children if applicable.

Novel Food: ingredients that were not widely consumed in the EU before May 1997 require Novel Food authorisation before they can be sold. CBD, ashwagandha (in some forms), and various plant extracts fall into this category. Check the FSA Novel Food catalogue before adding any new ingredient to your formulation.

Health Claims Compliance

Health claims on food and supplements are regulated by UK nutrition and health claims legislation (retained EU Regulation 1924/2006). Only approved claims can be used. For vitamins and minerals, the approved claims are specific: “Vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune system” is an approved claim. “Boosts your immune system” is not. Use the EU register of authorised claims (searchable online) to verify any health claim before publishing it on your product page, packaging, or advertising.

The ASA enforces advertising claims online as well as in traditional media. Health brands that make unapproved claims face enforcement action and negative press. Invest in getting claims right from the start — it is far cheaper than dealing with an ASA ruling after launch.

Product Page Strategy for Wellness Brands

Wellness buyers are research-intensive. They check ingredients, read reviews, compare products, and often spend 3–7 days researching before purchasing. Your product pages need: full ingredient transparency (quantity per serving, not just “proprietary blend”), third-party certifications visible (Informed Sport, Vegan Society, Organic certification), clear science or evidence citations where available, before/after customer stories with specific results, and FAQ sections addressing the most common purchase objections.

Marketing Channels for Health Brands

Meta Ads heavily restricts health claims in advertising copy — you cannot make the same claims in ads that you can make (with approval) on your product page. Learn Meta’s health advertising policies before building campaigns. Google Shopping is generally less restrictive for approved supplement products. Influencer marketing with qualified health professionals (personal trainers, nutritionists, physiotherapists) carries credibility that general lifestyle influencers cannot provide for health products.
