Health and Wellness: High Margins, Strict Claims Rules

The UK health and wellness market is worth £13 billion and growing. Supplements, vitamins, functional foods, and wellness products have excellent margins, strong repeat purchase behaviour, and an audience that actively researches before buying. The critical constraint: health claims are tightly regulated. Getting claims wrong doesn’t just risk a fine — it can destroy brand credibility overnight.

Health Claims Compliance (UK)

  • Only authorised EU/GB Nutrition and Health Claims are permitted. Check the Register of Authorised Claims before writing any product benefit copy.
  • “Helps maintain…” and “Contributes to…” are authorised phrase structures. “Cures”, “treats”, or “prevents” disease claims are MHRA (medicine) territory and require licensing.
  • Vitamin and mineral claims must meet minimum NRV (Nutrient Reference Value) thresholds to qualify
  • CBD products have additional regulatory considerations — check Food Standards Agency Novel Foods guidance

Building Trust for Health Products

Trust signals are disproportionately important in health and wellness because customers are putting products in their body. Display prominently: third-party testing certificates (heavy metals, purity), GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification, UK Soil Association or relevant certification for organic products, practitioner endorsements (nutritionists, health coaches), and clinical study references (where claims are substantiated by research).

Subscriptions for Supplements

Supplements taken daily create automatic subscription demand. Subscribe-and-save at 15–20% discount is standard for the category. Cadence: 30-day supply monthly, 90-day supply quarterly. Position subscriptions as “never run out” — for customers relying on daily supplements, running out creates real health inconvenience that subscriptions solve.

Wellness Content Marketing

Educational content drives organic traffic and positions your brand as an authority. Topics that rank well: “benefits of [ingredient]”, “signs of [nutrient] deficiency”, “best supplements for [goal]”, “how to improve [health outcome] naturally”. Each post educates, builds trust, and links to the relevant product. Health content done well earns backlinks from health blogs, NHS-adjacent sites, and fitness publications.
