Why Instagram Shopping Matters for Shopify Stores

Instagram Shopping allows customers to discover products on Instagram and check out without leaving the app (in the US) or click directly to your Shopify product page (in the UK and most international markets). Product tags on posts, Reels, and Stories create a seamless path from visual discovery to purchase. For stores in fashion, beauty, food, homeware, and lifestyle, Instagram Shopping is a high-intent acquisition channel.

Prerequisites for Instagram Shopping

To set up Instagram Shopping, you need: a business Instagram account, a Facebook page connected to the Instagram account, a Meta Commerce Manager account, and a Shopify store with the Meta (Facebook) channel app installed. Your products must comply with Instagram’s commerce policies — no prohibited items, accurate descriptions, and clear pricing.

Connecting Shopify to Meta Commerce Manager

Install the Meta channel app from the Shopify App Store. Follow the setup wizard: connect to your Facebook account, connect to your Facebook page and Instagram account, sync your Shopify product catalogue to Meta Commerce Manager. Once your catalogue is approved (typically 1–5 business days), you can enable Instagram Shopping on your Instagram account settings.

Go to your Instagram account settings → Creator tools and controls → Set up Instagram Shopping → Connect catalogue → Submit for review. After approval, you can tag products in posts, Reels, and Stories.

Product Catalogue Best Practices

Your Instagram Shopping performance depends on catalogue quality. Ensure: high-quality images (minimum 800x800px, white or clean background for product-only images), complete product descriptions, correct pricing matching your Shopify store, and unique product IDs that do not change when you update products. Category assignments matter — correctly categorised products surface in Instagram’s shopping browse features.

Tagging Products in Posts and Reels

When creating a post or Reel, tap “Tag products” and search your catalogue by product name or ID. Tag up to 5 products per image post and up to 20 products per Reel. Shoppable posts display a shopping bag icon — when tapped, it shows the product tag with name, price, and a “View on website” link. Tag products in context: a lifestyle image of a kitchen should tag the relevant homeware products visible in the shot, not random products from your catalogue.

Instagram Stories Shopping

Add product stickers to Instagram Stories. Create your Story, tap the sticker icon, search for “Product”, and link to the relevant product. Stories are highly effective for limited-time offers and new product launches because of their 24-hour ephemeral nature. Use the “Swipe up” replacement (now a link sticker) in combination with a product sticker for maximum call to action clarity.

Measuring Instagram Shopping Performance

In Instagram Insights, view product tag performance: how many people tapped the product tag, how many visited the product page, and conversion data via the Meta Pixel. In Shopify Analytics, set up UTM parameters on your Instagram Shopping link to track orders attributed to Instagram. Key metrics: product page visits from Instagram, add-to-cart rate, and Instagram-attributed revenue.

Shopify and TikTok Shopping

Install the TikTok channel app on Shopify for the equivalent setup on TikTok. Product linking in TikTok videos and LIVE shopping are available in the UK. TikTok Shopping is growing faster than Instagram Shopping for certain product categories — particularly impulse-buy, low-cost, and visually demonstrable products. If your audience skews 18–34, TikTok Shop is worth setting up alongside Instagram.
