Does Local SEO Matter for Shopify Stores?
If you sell exclusively online with no physical presence, local SEO is less relevant. But if you have a physical store, offer local delivery, or want to dominate searches for your city or region, local SEO can drive significant high-converting traffic. Searches like “organic coffee shop near me”, “florist Brighton same-day delivery”, or “men’s barber Shoreditch” all have strong local intent and are winnable.
1. Google Business Profile (GBP)
If you have a physical location, your Google Business Profile is the single most important local SEO asset. It appears in Google Maps and the local pack (the map with 3 business listings that appears at the top of local searches). Optimise every section:
- Business name — use your real business name, no keyword stuffing
- Category — choose the most specific primary category that fits your business
- Description — 750 characters, include your primary local keywords naturally
- Photos — minimum 10 high-quality photos. Exterior, interior, products, team. GBP listings with photos get 35% more website clicks.
- Hours — keep updated, especially for holidays
- Reviews — actively request reviews from customers. Respond to every review.
- Posts — publish GBP posts weekly (product highlights, offers, events)
2. Local Keywords on Your Shopify Store
Add local keywords to your Shopify store’s on-page content. If you’re a florist in Brighton, your homepage H1 might be “Brighton’s Favourite Florist” and product descriptions should mention “same-day delivery in Brighton and Hove.” Collection pages targeting local terms: /collections/brighton-flower-delivery, /collections/wedding-florist-brighton.
3. Create Dedicated Location Pages
If you serve multiple locations, create a dedicated page for each. A cleaning company serving London might have /services/cleaning-services-kensington, /services/cleaning-services-chelsea, /services/cleaning-services-fulham. Each page targets the specific local keyword and includes unique content about that area.
Template for location pages: what you offer in [location], your service area, local testimonials from customers in that area, and clear contact/booking CTA.
4. NAP Consistency
NAP = Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-references your NAP across the web. Inconsistencies (different phone number on Yelp vs your website vs GBP) weaken local ranking signals. Audit your NAP across: your website, GBP, Yelp, Facebook, Instagram, industry directories, and local chamber of commerce listings.
5. Local Schema Markup
Add LocalBusiness schema to your Shopify store’s homepage. This tells Google your business name, address, phone, opening hours, and geographical area served. Use JSON-LD format injected into your Shopify theme’s head section. Verify with Google’s Rich Results Test.
6. Local Link Building
Local backlinks from relevant local websites carry significant local ranking weight: local newspaper features, local business association directories, local event sponsorships, partnerships with complementary local businesses. “Brighton Mums” recommending your baby products shop carries more local SEO value than a generic directory listing.
