Localisation Goes Beyond Language

Many stores think localisation means translation. For English-speaking markets — UK, US, Australia, Canada — localisation is subtler: spelling conventions, date formats, sizing standards, payment expectations, cultural references, legal requirements, and pricing conventions. A UK brand selling to the US with “favourite,” “colour,” and “£” pricing feels foreign and creates low-level friction. The same content localised for US (“favorite,” “color,” “$”) converts significantly better.

UK vs US Shopify Store Differences

  • Spelling — colour vs color, favour vs favor, organise vs organize, fulfil vs fulfill
  • Sizing — UK clothing sizes differ from US. UK 12 = US 8. Always show both in size guides for cross-market stores
  • Payment methods — UK: Klarna, Clearpay, BACS; US: Afterpay, Affirm, ACH bank transfer. PayPal is universal
  • Shipping expectations — UK: 1–3 days standard; US: 5–7 days acceptable for standard, 1–2 days premium
  • Date format — UK: DD/MM/YYYY; US: MM/DD/YYYY. Important for promotions with deadline dates
  • Consumer law — UK: statutory 30-day right to return; US: no federal right to return (retailer policy only)

Australian Market Considerations

  • Currency: AUD prominently. AU$ not just $
  • GST (Goods and Services Tax): 10% on most goods. Include in displayed price or note clearly
  • Shipping expectations: long delivery times from UK/US are expected (10–14 days). Or use an Australian 3PL for local fulfilment
  • Spelling: follows UK conventions (colour, favour, organise)
  • Payment: Afterpay is the dominant BNPL in Australia (Clearpay is the same service rebranded for non-AU markets)

Implementing with Shopify Markets

Shopify Markets + Shopify Translate & Adapt lets you create market-specific content variations. For same-language markets (UK vs US English), you can use content overrides within the same language to swap spellings, sizing information, and market-specific copy without creating entirely separate storefronts. Shopify’s Geolocation app automatically redirects visitors to their market-appropriate version based on IP location.
