Why Loyalty Programmes Work for Shopify Stores
Acquiring a new customer costs 5–7x more than retaining an existing one. Loyalty programmes are the most direct mechanism for retaining customers who would otherwise drift to a competitor — by creating tangible, accumulating value that makes switching away feel like leaving money on the table.
Research consistently shows that loyalty programme members spend 12–18% more per transaction and have significantly higher LTV. They also refer more friends because they’re more emotionally invested in the brand.
Loyalty Programme Mechanics
Points-Based Programmes
The most common model. Customers earn points for purchases, social actions, referrals, and reviews. Points are redeemed for discounts, free products, or store credit.
Key design decision: point value and earn rate. A common structure: 1 point per £1 spent, 100 points = £1 discount. At this rate, a customer who spends £200 earns £2 in rewards (1% return). That’s enough to feel meaningful without costing significant margin.
Tiered Programmes
Customers unlock better benefits as they spend more. Bronze (new customers) → Silver (repeat buyers) → Gold (top customers). Each tier offers progressively better earn rates, exclusive perks, or access.
Tiers create aspirational goals (“I’m £50 away from Gold status”) that drive additional spend. They also reward your best customers proportionally — Gold members get the most valuable perks, which is appropriate given their contribution to your revenue.
VIP Status (Non-Points)
Some brands create VIP programmes without points — simply a status designation (e.g., “Founding Member”, “VIP”) that unlocks exclusive benefits: early product access, private sales, free shipping, priority customer service. Less transactional, more emotional. Works well for premium brands where “status” has brand value.
Actions That Earn Points
Beyond purchases, the best loyalty programmes reward actions that have non-purchase business value:
- Account creation — 200 points for signing up
- First purchase — Bonus points on the first order to accelerate early engagement
- Writing a review — 50–100 points for a product review (drives social proof)
- Referral — 500 points when a referred friend places their first order
- Birthday — Bonus points in their birthday month
- Social follow/share — Small point bonus for following on Instagram or sharing a product
- Subscribing to email/SMS — Points for joining your marketing list
Redemption Options
Customers should have choices for how they spend points — but not so many options the programme feels complex:
- Discount at checkout — Most common. Customer sees how many points they have and can apply them as a discount.
- Free product — Specific products available for point redemption. Creates excitement without margin cost (if the product is your low-cost, high-perceived-value item).
- Exclusive experiences — Events, behind-the-scenes access, product naming rights. More powerful for brand building but harder to administer at scale.
Shopify Loyalty Programme Apps
Smile.io
The most popular Shopify loyalty app. Points, referrals, and VIP tier programmes. Clean customer-facing widget, email integration with Klaviyo and Omnisend. Free plan for stores under 200 monthly orders. Paid plans from £49/month.
LoyaltyLion
More customisable than Smile.io. Better for brands that want the loyalty programme deeply integrated into their brand identity rather than a generic widget. Stronger analytics and segmentation. From £99/month.
Yotpo Loyalty
Part of the Yotpo suite (reviews + loyalty + SMS). If you’re already using Yotpo for reviews, adding their loyalty module integrates both platforms seamlessly. Good for mid-market stores.
Communicating Your Programme
A loyalty programme no one knows about doesn’t retain anyone. Communication touchpoints:
- Homepage banner announcing the programme
- Post-purchase email: “You earned X points on your order”
- Points balance reminder in newsletter footer
- Monthly email to inactive members showing their unused points (drives re-engagement)
- Packaging insert mentioning the programme
Stores that actively communicate their loyalty programme see 3–4x higher redemption rates and proportionally higher retention than stores that install the programme but don’t promote it.
