Should You Sell on Marketplaces Alongside Shopify?

Marketplaces (Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop, Etsy) give you access to millions of existing buyers at zero additional marketing cost. Your Shopify store gives you brand ownership, better margins, and direct customer relationships. The question isn’t whether marketplaces are worth using — it’s how to use them in a way that adds revenue without undermining your core Shopify brand.

The Marketplace Trade-Off

  • Amazon: Huge traffic, high trust, fast Prime fulfilment. Costs 8–15% referral fee + FBA fulfilment fees. No brand relationship with customers. Algorithm-driven visibility that can disappear. Good for: high-demand products with clear keywords, commodity and consumables.
  • eBay: Lower trust for new brands, but strong for specific categories (collectibles, electronics, parts). Lower fees than Amazon. Good for: slow-moving stock clearance, unique/vintage products, parts and accessories.
  • TikTok Shop: Fastest-growing marketplace in UK/US. Social commerce — products discovered via TikTok content, purchased without leaving the app. Good for: visually interesting, demonstrable products (beauty, food, gadgets, fashion). Requires TikTok content investment to activate.
  • Etsy: Covered earlier — primarily for handmade, vintage, and craft products. Strong trust for this category.

Inventory Sync: The Critical Technical Step

Selling on multiple channels with the same inventory creates a risk: you sell the last unit of a product on Amazon and then someone orders it on Shopify. Without inventory sync, you either oversell (bad) or manually allocate inventory to each channel (time-consuming).

Multi-channel inventory management solutions:

  • Shopify’s native channel integrations — Shopify has official Amazon, eBay, and TikTok Shop channels available in the App Store. Products sync directly and inventory is shared across channels. Start here before adding third-party tools.
  • Linnworks — Centralises inventory across Shopify, Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and other channels. Automatically adjusts stock levels when a sale happens on any channel.
  • Veeqo — Free multi-channel inventory and shipping management (Amazon-owned). Strong for stores using Amazon FBA alongside Shopify.

Pricing Strategy Across Channels

Marketplace fees mean you need higher or equal prices on marketplaces compared to your Shopify store to maintain margin. Common approaches:

  • Match prices: Same price everywhere. Simpler to manage. Marketplace fees come from your margin.
  • Slightly higher on marketplaces: Account for marketplace fees so your margin stays consistent. Customers expect to pay marketplace prices on Amazon — a small premium is accepted.
  • Shopify exclusives: Some products or bundles are only available on your Shopify store. This drives traffic to your owned channel for the best selection.

Using Marketplaces as Customer Acquisition

Marketplace customers become Shopify customers over time if you design the transition. Packaging inserts with your Shopify store URL and a QR code for an exclusive discount (“Get 10% off your next order at ourstore.com/welcome”) convert marketplace buyers into direct customers where you own the relationship and pay no marketplace fee.

Note: Amazon explicitly prohibits including packaging inserts designed to divert customers from Amazon. eBay and Etsy have less strict rules here. Read each marketplace’s seller terms carefully before using this tactic.

TikTok Shop: A Special Case

TikTok Shop’s direct integration with TikTok content (products purchasable from videos without leaving the app) creates a unique opportunity for content-driven brands. Set up via the TikTok Shop Seller Center. Connect your Shopify catalogue via the TikTok channel app in Shopify.

The commitment: TikTok Shop only works if you’re actively creating TikTok content featuring your products. Without content driving viewers to your product listings, TikTok Shop generates minimal organic revenue. If you’re already creating TikTok content, adding the Shop integration is a no-brainer — it’s a free upgrade from driving traffic to a link in bio to allowing direct checkout on the video.
